Men's Basketball Adds More Talent With Transfer Hunter Hale

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop head men's basketball coach Pat Kelsey announced the addition of graduate transfer Hunter Hale on Friday.
Hale (Kalamazoo, MI) comes to the Eagles after graduating from Grand Valley State University, where he led the team in scoring this past season. The 6-3 guard averaged 17.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.0 apg and 2.3 spg while shooting 42 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three.

"Hunter is a big get for us," said Kelsey, who will be entering his 8th season with the Eagles. "He is a true two-way player that brings firepower on both ends. He is a 40+ three point shooter, had almost 100 assists, shot upper 80's from the line and had 70 steals. That is an efficient basketball player. Most importantly, he is an impressive, mature and driven young man that will provide great leadership for us. I can't wait to coach him."

The 74 steals for Hale this past season were the 4th most in the history of the Grand Valley State program, led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and were 11th nationally. Hale was one of the top three-point shooters in the GLIAC and the nation as he connected on 88 for the year at 2.75 per game (76th nationally). His 41 percent behind the arc ranked 48th in the nation. Hale also made 113 trips to the foul line, making 99 (T-9th in the league) and his 87.6 percentage ranked 4th in the league.

Hale's all-around game earned him First Team honors in the GLIAC in 2018-19. Hale was a Second Team All-Conference performer in the GLIAC in 2017-18.
This past season Hale scored in double-figures in 30-of-32 games played as he helped guide the team to a GLIAC Championship and 8-seed for the Division II NCAA Tournament.

Hale is the sixth addition for 2019-20, joining DeShawn Thomas, Adonis Arms, Chase Claxton, Josh Corbin, Russell Jones, and Jamal King.
