N. CHARLESTON, SC— Ansley Gilreath's two-run homerun in the top of the eighth inning of game two of a doubleheader helped Winthrop softball earn a split at Charleston Southern, Thursday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the first game 4-1 and bounced back to earn a 3-1 win in extra innings.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- The Buccaneers struck first with three runs in the third inning
- With a runner on first and one out, SeaEnna Satcher reached on a fielding error by Ansley Gilreath
- Annie Bakenhus followed with a single to center to load the bases
- After Kiley Majette got the second out on a fly out, Jade Gandara grounded to first and reached on an error as one run scored
- The inning stayed alive and the Bucs took advantage as Caitlyn Emberson followed with a single to center, scoring two more runs for a 3-0 lead
- Eagles finally broke through in the fifth inning
- Brooke Ellison led off with a single but then Madyson Watson grounded into a double play
- That didn't stop the Eagles as Tori Walker drew a walk and then stole second as Gilreath followed with a single to score Walker
- Majette suffered the loss and falls to 7-13 after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts in five innings
Game 2
- Eagles struck first in the third inning as Taylor Charlton was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning
- Charlton was sacrificed to second by Blake Wallert and moved to third on a Morgan Lowers single
- Lowers then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Ashley Westbrooks but she popped up to short
- Keleigh Romine came through as she ripped on a single on the first pitch to score Charlton
- Eagles had more chances to add to their lead starting with runners at first and second and two outs in the fourth but Wallert popped up to first
- Westbrooks doubled with one out in the fifth and moved to third on a Romine single, but Ellison grounded out to third and Watson fouled out to end the threat
- In the top of the fourth, Watson gave up a leadoff double but recorded the next three outs
- Watson allowed a one out double in the fifth inning but the Eagles turned a double play to end the threat
- Eagles held the lead until the seventh inning when a fielding error helped Charleston Southern tie the game and force extra innings
- Sarah Brown led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right but Romine misplayed the bounce and the ball shot off her body toward the outfield fence as Brown raced over to third
- Rhiana Hubbard tied the game with a sacrifice fly
- In the top of the eighth Brooke Ellison led off with a single but was out at second on a fielder's choice from Watson
- After Walker flied out to center, Gilreath stepped in and hit a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right center for a 3-1 lead
- Watson tossed a complete game allowing one unearned run on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts to improve to 14-4 on the year
- Watson kept the Bucs 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-11 with runners on base
EXTRA BASES
- Watson remained undefeated in Big South action at 9-0 and her 14 wins are the most by a Winthrop pitcher since teammate Majette won 16 in 2017
- The last Winthrop pitcher to go undefeated in league play is Megan Evans in 2009 as she was 7-0 in eight starts and 13 appearances
- Lowers was 0-for-3 in the first game after having hit safely in 10 straight meetings with the Bucs
- Westbrooks was 0-for-3 in the first game after having hit safely in seven straight against the Bucs and ended her streak of reaching base at 22 straight games
- Romine now has an RBI in six of the last nine games
