ROCK HILL, SC - Trailing 2-0 after three innings of play, the Eagles exploded for six fourth-inning runs after a quiet offensive start to top Wofford at the Winthrop Ballpark on Tuesday night by an 8-4 score. Winthrop is now 21-15 on the season (10-5 Big South) after picking up their third straight win, and Wofford drops to 23-16 (6-3 SOCON) with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winthrop used six pitchers on Tuesday, with a combination of bullpen arms getting the job done on the mound.
Mason Groves got the start and went the first two innings of the ballgame. After hitting the first batter he faced and walking the second, Groves got out of the first inning relatively unscathed, allowing one run. Groves finished his outing allowing one earned run and one hit, walking one batter.
Bryan Petta pitched the third inning, allowing one run on one hit with one walk like Groves.
Dalton Whitaker was very sharp for the second straight outing, tossing three perfect innings and recording two strikeouts. Whitaker was the winning pitcher for Winthrop (1-1).
Braxton Foley came on to pitch the seventh inning and tossed a scoreless frame, allowing one hit and striking out two batters. The eighth inning went to
Jason Crumley, who surrendered two runs three hits as Wofford cut the Winthrop lead to 6-4. After two insurance runs came across in the bottom of the eighth,
Colten Rendon got the final three outs in the ninth inning, striking out one and not allowing a hit.
- The fourth inning was a busy offensive inning for the Eagles, as they scored six times in the frame to turn a 2-0 Wofford lead into a 6-2 Winthrop advantage. After
Alex Raines walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Spencer Yankle got the Eagles on the board with an RBI double down the left field line that brought Raines to the plate.
Hunter Lipscomb followed Yankle with an RBI single to center field that scored Yankle from second and tied the game at 2. After a flyout,
Matthew Mulkey knocked an RBI double off the right field wall, bringing in Lipscomb to give the Eagles the lead at 3-2. After Mulkey stole third base and
Jake Sullivan walked,
Brandon Fite hit an infield single to the left side, scoring Mulkey and moving Sullivan up to second base. Winthrop's fifth run came when
Tyler Baker punched a single to right center field, scoring Sullivan and moving Fite to third base. Finally, Fite would score from third on a balk by Wofford's newly welcomed reliever.
- After the Terriers scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to close the Winthrop lead to 6-4, the Eagles responded back with two of their own, when
Hunter Lipscomb connected for his fifth home run of the year, a no-doubt shot to right field that also scored
Spencer Yankle, who led off the inning with a walk. The long ball made it 8-4 Eagles and set up
Colten Rendon to come on and close out the ballgame.
