GREENVILLE, NC— Winthrop softball earned a split on the second day of the Purple-Gold Invitational, beginning the day with a 5-4 win over Columbia before falling 2-1 to Massachusetts Saturday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Columbia
- Eagles won on a walk-off error as Romine scored after a miscue by the shortstop
- Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Charlton delivered a single to center with two aboard that scored Brooke Ellison from second base
- On the play the shortstop made a fielding error that allowed Romine to cross the plate for the winning run
- Winthrop trailed 1-0 after an inning but took a 3-1 lead in the second
- A.G. Gardner singled to left center with one out followed by a single to center by Logan Webb
- Two batters later, Tori Walker doubled to center with two outs that scored Gardner and Webb for a 2-1 lead
- Morgan Lowers made it 3-1 as she singled to left to score Walker
- Columbia got one back in the top of the third when Sommer Grzybek led off the inning with a homerun
- The lead held until the top of the seventh when Columbia pushed two runs across for a 4-3 lead
- The Lions put two runners on with one out before Grzybek was intentionally walked to load the bases and put a force out at each base
- Madyson Watson walked Abby Stuart on a full count to tie the game at 3-3 and then a sacrifice fly by Yule for a 4-3 lead
- Watson tossed 6.1 innings allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks and struck out a career-high nine strikeouts but didn't factor into the decision
- Kiley Majette tossed two-thirds of an inning earning the win in relief
vs. UMASS
- Majette tossed a complete game allowing two unearned runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts but took the loss as she's 3-4 on the year
- UMASS took a 2-0 lead in the second as an error put the leadoff batter on first followed by a double from Hannah Bunker to put runners at second and third
- Majette recorded the next two outs with strikeouts but squeezed in between was a single to short by Garcia for the first run and then after the second strikeout a single up the middle by Erin Stacevicz drove in the second run
- Eagles bounced back with a run in the third to cut the deficit in half as Walker doubled with one out and then two batters later Ellison tripled to center to score Walker
- Quinn Breidenbach held the Winthrop offense in check the rest of the way, not allowing a single base runner in the final four innings
EXTRA BASES
- Ellison has now tripled in two of the last three games and has a career-high four on the season and has now hit in a career-best four straight games
- The last three games have been decided by one run as the Eagles have now played in five one-run games on the season
- Walker and Lowers have both hit safely in three straight games

Winthrop will wrap-up play at the Purple-Gold Invitational on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 11:30 a.m. when it takes on the host East Carolina.
