ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team struggled offensively in the second half Sunday, falling 12-4 to the Davidson Wildcats at Eagle Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Davidson (1-0) got off to a strong start offensively, going up 4-0 in the opening 10 minutes.
Ellie Marindin got the Eagles on the board with 7:38 left in the half on a feed from
Lauren Morris. The Wildcats netted two more goals to go up 6-1 with 5:17 to play.
The Eagles closed the half on a strong note, scoring twice in the final two minutes.
Mia Creighton scored unassisted with 1:37 on the clock and
Lauren Asher netted a goal with 52 seconds left to pull the Eagles within 6-3 at the break.
Winthrop (0-2) came out in the second half and netted a goal in the less than three minutes to pull within two. It was the only goal the Eagles managed in the second half. Davidson went back up by three just over two minutes later and then scored three goals in a two-minute span to go up 10-4 with 16:02 to play. The Wildcats added two more goals to reach the 12-4 final score.

Asher, Marindin, Creighton and
Lauren Morris each tallied one goal for the Eagles and
Alaina Girani finished with 11 saves and seven ground balls in the loss. Davidson outshot the Eagles 26-18, won the ground ball battle 19-18 and pulled down 13 draw controls to Winthrop's five.

Winthrop will remain home for its next contest as the Eagles host former Big South foe Liberty Friday at 3 p.m. at Eagle Field.
