Eagles Host High Point In Final Game Of 2019

ROCK HILL, S.C.—  Winthrop women's basketball will look to end 2019 with a win as it hosts High Point at 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve. The Eagles improved to 4-6 on the season with a home conference win over Hampton on Saturday.

HISTORY VS. HIGH POINT
The Eagles and Panthers have met 50 times in history with High Point holding a 20-30 series lead. Winthrop has struggled against High Point in recent years, dropping nine of its last 10 meetings against the Panthers. High Point narrowly defeated the Eagles, 56-54, the last time these teams met on January 29, 2019. Kem Nwabudu led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds.
 
WINTHROP
Winthrop women's basketball returned home on Saturday after a three game road trip to open Big South Conference play. Winthrop extended its win streak with a 72-66 win over the Hampton Pirates. Destinee Jamison-Whitfield led the team in scoring for the third straight game with 17 points. Kem Nwabudu and Miquela Santoro each contributed 13 points, while Maleeah Langstaff had a career-high 12 points and 12 rebounds, recording the first double-double of her collegiate career. The Eagles were clicking on offensive, leading by 12 points with 10 minutes to play. The Panthers chipped away at the Eagles lead with a 15-4 to make it a one possession game with 4:22 to play. Winthrop made seven of its last 10 baskets to hang on to the lead and earn the win.

HIGH POINT
High Point opened Big South Conference play with a 73-36 loss to Campbell, falling to 2-8 on the season. Sophomore Skyler Curran led the team with eight points and seven rebounds. High Point earned its two wins of the season against East Tennessee State and North Carolina Central. The Panthers returned four players, led by senior Camryn Brown, as well as seniors Miya Bull and Olivia VanSlooten and sophomore Skyler Curran. High Point is averaging 61.2 points per game, shooting 34 percent from the field, 28 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the line.
 
RILEY CLOSING IN ON 500 REBOUNDS
Junior Anika Riley is 15 away from 500 career rebounds. In Winthrop's win over Hampton, Riley finished with seven rebounds. As a freshman, Riley appeared in all 30 games, averaging 5.6 rebounds. She finished with a total of 174. Riley earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team. In her sophomore season, she tallied 167 defensive rebounds and 73 offensive rebounds for a total of 240, averaging eight a game. Riley appeared in all 30 games. Schaquilla Nunn (2012-15) currently holds the school record with 910 career rebounds.
