HISTORY VS. HAMPTON
The Eagles and Pirates have met three times in history prior to Saturday's contest. Winthrop first faced Hampton in 1982 when the Pirates were still Hampton Institute. The Eagles won, 74-53. Hampton left the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to join the Big South in 2018. These teams met twice during the 2018-19 season, and Hampton won both meetings. In the last matchup on March 9, 2019,
Kem Nwabudu recorded a career-high 25 points.
WINTHROP
Winthrop women's basketball improved to 3-6 on the season after defeating Western Carolina in the final non-conference contest of the season on Saturday afternoon, 63-60.
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield led the team with a new career-high 20 points.
Jah'Che Whitfield also reached double figures, with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. The Eagles outscored the Catamounts 38-13 in the second and third quarter of the contest; despite being slowed down in the final 10 minutes of play the Eagles held on for a 3-point win.
HAMPTON
Hampton University holds a 4-5 record heading into Big South Conference play. The Pirates are coming off a 69-65 win over Richmond in the Anne Donovan Classic. Hampton had four players in double-figures; Ashley Bates led the squad with 17, Nylah Young contributed 15 and Laren Vanarsdale and Charlisa Jenkins each had 12. Jenkins had a double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds. A 10-0 fourth-quarter run secured the Pirates 4th win of the season. Hampton University also saw Mount Saint Mary's and Old Dominion in the Anne Donovan Classic. The Pirates defeated Mount St. Mary's, 68-60, and lost to Old Dominion, 75-38.
JAMISON-WHITFIELD EARNS BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE HONORS
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield was named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.The sophomore led Winthrop to back-to-back road wins beginning with a 75-63 win at UNC Wilmington on Tuesday. Against the Seahawks she had a career-high 17 points, going 6-for-7 from the floor and 3-of-3 behind the arc. She then bettered her career-high with 20 points in a 63-60 win at Western Carolina. She hit a three just before the break to give the Eagles a five-point advantage at the half and then helped clinch the win with two free throws with 14 seconds remaining for a five point lead. This is the first conference player of the week award for Winthrop since Erica Williams earned the honor on Dec. 7, 2015.
RILEY CLOSING IN ON 500 REBOUNDS
Junior
Anika Riley is 22 away from 500 career rebounds. In Winthrop's win over Western Carolina, Riley finished with four rebounds. As a freshman, Riley appeared in all 30 games, averaging 5.6 rebounds. She finished with a total of 174. Riley earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team. In her sophomore season, she tallied 167 defensive rebounds and 73 offensive rebounds for a total of 240, averaging eight a game. Riley appeared in all 30 games. Schaquilla Nunn (2012-15) currently holds the school record with 910 career rebounds.
