Eagles Host Elon Saturday Afternoon To Close Out 2019

Rock Hill, S.C.— Winthrop will close out 2019 on Saturday, Dec. 21 when it hosts Elon at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles won't be back in action again until it opens Big South Conference action on Jan. 2, 2020.

  • Winthrop and Elon meet for the 13th time, but the first time since 2003
  • Elon had a brief stop in the Big South Conference after it transitioned to the NCAA level and the two teams met 10 times as league members
  • The last meeting came Jan. 18, 2003 in Elon as the Eagles earned a 67-60 victory
  • Winthrop has won the last three meetings and the last five at the Winthrop Coliseum

  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his eighth season with the Eagles (144-90)
  • Kelsey is now all alone in 8th place for career wins in Big South history, just two wins behind 7th
  • Ended four-game losing streak with a 20-point win over SIUE at home
  • Eagles connected on a season-high 15 threes, the most in a game since a home win over Hampton on Feb. 9, 2019
  • Have been one of the top teams in the country in assists per game and rebounding
  • Currently rank 35th in the country in rebounds per game, 25th in offensive rebounds, 57th in rebound margin
  • Averaging 16.2 assists per game as a team, which ranks 43rd
  • Moved into the Top 75 nationally (72nd) in scoring at 77.7 ppg
  • Josh Ferguson has scored in double-figures in four straight games and leads the team with 13.3 ppg (ranked 9th in the Big South)
  • Chandler Vaudrin has just three assists in the last two games, but still leads the league at 5.5 per game and ranks 38th nationally
 
ELON
  • Phoenix are led by first-year head coach Mike Schrage (4-8)
  • Schrage spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State
  • Come to the Winthrop Coliseum 0-5 on the road this season, but three of the losses were against Power 5 opponents
  • So far this season Elon is 0-2 against the Big South with road losses at High Point and Campbell
  • Led by Stanford transfer Marcus Sheffield II, who is averaging 15.8 ppg and leads the team at the free throw line in makes, attempts and percentage (36-40/90%)
  • Sheffield II is 1-of-2 Elon players averaging double-figures as Hunter Woods is second on the team with 10.4 ppg
  • Hunter McIntosh is close at 9.0 ppg and is tied for a team-high 24 made threes
  • Sheffield II has led the team in scoring seven times, including a team-high 14 points at Campbell
  • Have hit 10 or more threes in eight games this season including a season-high 19 in the win over N.C. Wesleyan
 
HALE REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Hunter Hale surpassed 1,000 points in his collegiate career after scoring 17 points in the loss at Furman. Hale's career began at Central Michigan and this last spring Hale transferred to the Eagles from Grand Valley State to begin graduate school and arrived with 926 points in his career. This season Hale is averaging 9.6 ppg as he's started 9-of-10 games he's played this season.

WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
