WILMINGTON, N.C. – Winthrop women's basketball snapped its five game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon when they defeated UNCW, 75-63. This is the Eagles first double-digit win over a nonconference opponent since Nov. 14, 2018 when they beat North Carolina Central, 66-41.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tuesday's contest was a back-and-forth battle that saw 16 lead changes. The Eagles were outscored 15-12 in the first 10 minutes of Tuesday's contest, shooting just 38 percent from the field and going 0-3 from behind the arc. In the second quarter, the Eagles were perfect from the free throw line, making all five shots, and shooting 50 percent from the field.
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield had nine of her 17 points in the second quarter. Winthrop was able to pull away in the third with a 16-4 run, going 4-for-4 from 3.
Sydney Buckley finished with nine points, all coming off three 3-pointers in the third quarter. The Eagles led by 11 points with 10 minutes to play and hung on for a 12-point victory. Winthrop improves to 2-6 on the season.
