Eagles Head To Wilmington For Early Contest Against UNCW

ROCK HILL, S.C. —  The road trip continues for Winthrop women's basketball as they travel to Wilmington to face UNCW. Tipoff is set for 11:30 a.m. as part of their annual education day.

SERIES/ CAA HISTORY
The Eagles and Seahawks have met three times in history, the Eagles winning two of those contests. These teams last met 20 years ago on Nov. 19, 1999. The Seahawks downed the Eagles, 76-45. Winthrop is 20-52 all-time against current Colonial Athletic Association schools. Most recently, Winthrop hosted the College of Charleston Cougars and were defeated 84-73.

WINTHROP
Winthrop faced its toughest challenge its last time out, falling to No. 14 Kentucky, 91-36. Kem Nwabudu led the team with nine points while Destinee Jamison-Whitfield contributed eight points off the bench. Jah'Che Whitfield had eight points of her own and led the team with six boards. Freshman Sierra Hunter recorded her first collegiate point when she went one-for-two at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 17 percent from behind the arc and 46 percent from the line against the Wildcats.

UNCW
The Seahawks are coming off a 62-43 loss to Coastal Carolina and are currently 3-5 on the season. UNCW was led by senior GiGi Smith, who scored 12 points. while Chinyere Bell contributed 11 points off the bench. Ahyiona Vason recorded a team-high five assists, while Paige Powell led the team in boards with six. UNCW returned 12 players, six of them being seniors. They were picked to finish fifth in the CAA standings.

RILEY CLOSING IN ON 500 REBOUNDS
Anika Riley is averaging 7.9 rebounds per game. She has 462 career rebounds, just 38 shy of the 500 milestone. As a freshman, Riley appeared in all 30 games, averaging 5.6 rebounds. She finished with a total of 174. Riley earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team. In her sophomore season, she tallied 167 defensive rebounds and 73 offensive rebounds for a total of 240, averaging eight a game. Riley appeared in all 30 games. Schaquilla Nunn (2012-15) currently holds the school record with 910 career rebounds.  

WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season for the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
