Eagles Head West To Take On Fresno State, #20 Saint Mary's

ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop men's basketball team begins a two-game swing on the west coast as it takes on Fresno State and Saint Mary's back-to-back days Nov. 10-11.

  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his eighth season with the Eagles (140-83)
  • Coming off 67-57 win at Hartford in the season opener
  • Eagles are now 6-2 under Kelsey in season openers
  • Winthrop playing first ever games in the state of California
  • Hunter Hale led the Eagles with 15 points in the opener as he also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals
  • Eagles had 27 bench points at Hartford led by 14 points from Kyle Zunic
  • When the Eagles face Saint Mary's, they'll be looking for their first win over a Top 25 team since 2007 (Winthrop 76, #19 Miami 70)
  • Broke the program record for three-pointers per game for a second straight season in 2018-19
  • Under Kelsey the team has six of the top seven seasons for total threes and threes per game
  • The 2019-20 squad features nine new players and 10 if you include Chandler Vaudrin, who sat out last season after transferring to Winthrop
 
FRESNO STATE
  • Led by second year head coach Justin Houston (23-10)
  • Opened the season with a 71-57 loss at 14th-ranked Oregon
  • Nate Grimes was the only player in double-figures as he finished with 13 points
  • Sunday will be Paul George Day as the program will retire his number at halftime
  • Bulldogs were 23-9 last season with a 13-5 mark in the Mountain West
 
SAINT MARY'S
  • Led by Randy Bennett in his 19th season (415-174)
  • Opened the season with an overtime win over Wisconsin in Sioux Falls, SD
  • Jordan Ford scored 26 points to lead the Gaels in scoring and also had three assists and three steals
  • Malik Fitts had 16 points, five rebounds while Matthias Tass had five points, four assists and 10 rebounds
  • Coming off a 22-12 season in 2018-19 and 11-5 mark in the West Coast Conference 
WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.

Fans can listen to the games all season long on OTS Media of Rock Hill (94.3 FM and 104.1 The Bridge), which is the flagship station for Winthrop Athletics. In addition, most games will simulcast on 730 ESPN Charlotte and AM 1450 WGNC Gastonia.
