Winthrop Women's Basketball Opens 2019-20 Season Against Iona

ROCK HILL, S.C.— Winthrop women's basketball will open the 2019-20 season Saturday night when it hosts Iona College at the Winthrop Coliseum.

SERIES/MAAC HISTORY
This is the first meeting between Winthrop and Iona College. The Eagles are 2-5 all-time against current MAAC opponents. Winthrop's last win over a MAAC opponent came during Marlene Stollings' only season with the Eagles when they hosted Niagra in the Winthrop Classic. Eagles won, 82-47 (11/19/11).

WINTHROP
Lynette Woodard is entering her third full season with the Eagles (13-51). The team is coming off a 10-20 overall season, 6-12 in conference play, and was ranked 7th in the Big South Conference preseason poll. Winthrop returns four starters from 2018-19: Maleeah Langstaff, Jah'Che Whitfield, Miquela Santoro and Kem Nwabudu. The Eagles have opened their season at home fives times in the last 10 seasons, winning four of those home games. The Eagles defeated North Greenville on Tuesday in an exhibition game, 76-49.

IONA
The Gaels are led by sixth-year head coach, Billi Chambers. Coming off a 5-26 season overall and a 3-15 mark in the MAAC, the Gaels were selected to finish 9th overall in the MAAC preseason poll. Iona is 5-5 in its last 10 season openers; six of those season openers have been road games. They won just two of those six meetings. The team beat Kutztown, 76-70, in an exhibition game on Saturday.

RILEY CLOSING IN ON 500 REBOUNDS
Junior Anika Riley enters the 2019-20 season 86 rebounds shy of the 500 milestone. As a freshman, Riley appeared in all 30 games, averaging 5.6 rebounds. She finished with a total of 174. Riley earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team. In her sophomore season, she tallied 167 defensive rebounds and 73 offensive rebounds for a total of 240, averaging eight a game. Riley appeared in all 30 games. Schaquilla Nunn (2012-15) currently holds the school record with 910 career rebounds.  

WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season for the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
