Eagles Take On Top-Ranked Duke Friday Night At Cameron Indoor

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop makes its first ever trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium as it takes on top-ranked Duke Friday evening in non-conference men's basketball action.

  • Winthrop and Duke meet for the second time
  • It's been 17 years since the two teams squared off as the last meeting was Mar. 14, 2002 in Greenville, SC in the first round of the NCAA Tournament
  • The Eagles fell 84-37 to the top-ranked Blue Devils
 
THE GAME
  • Winthrop faces the number one team in the country for just the second time in program history
  • The only other meeting with the top-ranked team in the country came against the same program in 2002
  • Winthrop was the 16 seed and Duke was a #1 seed and the top-ranked team
  • Eagles are coming off a 127-83 win over Pfeiffer as they used a balanced offense with seven players in double-figures
  • Duke is coming off its first loss of the season as it fell 85-83 at the buzzer in overtime, ending a 150-game home non-conference win streak
  • Winthrop and Duke are some of the top rebounding teams in the country
  • Eagles have a +7.5 rebounding margin while Duke is +12.4
  • The Blue Devils ranked 4th in the country in rebounding margin before its loss to Stephen F. Austin while the Eagles were 52nd as of Nov. 26

  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his eighth season with the Eagles (142-85)
  • Kelsey is now all alone in 8th place for career wins in Big South history, just one win behind 7th
  • While this is the first time Kelsey has faced Duke as a head coach, he is very familiar with the Duke program and the atmosphere of Cameron Indoor from his time at Wake Forest
  • Eagles are coming off 127 points against Pfeiffer, the program's 4th highest point total in a home game
  • Redshirt freshman D.J. Burns Jr. led seven players in double-figures with a career-high 19 points and is now the team's scoring leader at 12.6 per game
  • Senior Josh Ferguson is second in scoring at 11.7 ppg while freshman Russell Jones Jr. is third at 9.1 ppg
  • The Eagles had 31 assists in the win, which were the most by a Winthrop team under Kelsey
  • As a team the Eagles are 5th nationally in assists and 40th in assists per game (16.9) as of Nov. 26
  • Jones Jr. is second in the Big South in assist/turnover ratio and 29th nationally (3.25) while Chandler Vaudrin is 40th nationally in assists per game (5.7)
  • Looking for the program's sixth ever victory against an opponent from the ACC as well as the second win over a ranked team this season
 
DUKE
  • Blue Devils are led by Mike Kryzyzewski in his 40th season at Duke (1,065-286)
  • Kryzyzewski is in his 44th season overall with a career record of 1,138-345 and has led the Blue Devils to five national titles
  • Entered the week ranked #1 in both polls (AP/Coaches)
  • Freshman Vernon Carey Jr. leads three players in double-figures at 18.6 ppg and nearly averages a double-double at 9.4 rpg
  • Tre Jones is scoring 15.1 ppg and 7.0 apg while Cassius Stanley is averaging 14.1 ppg and 5.3 rpg
  • Blue Devils feature one of the top offenses in the country at 83.9 ppg (was ranked 23rd at 84.0 before Stephen F. Austin contest)
  • Defensively allowing 64.0 ppg and forcing 19.3 turnovers a game
 
HALE HUNTING FOR 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Hunter Hale is approaching 1,000 points in his collegiate career that began that began at Central Michigan. Hale transferred to the Eagles from Grand Valley State to begin graduate school and arrived with 926 points in his career. This season Hale is averaging 8.4 ppg as he's played in four of the team's six games (missed two for injury). He is now 32 points away from 1,000 in his career.

WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
