Rock Hill S.C. – Winthrop volleyball is set to host the 2019 Big South Conference tournament this weekend. Six teams qualify for post season volleyball play and every match will take place in the Winthrop Coliseum, spanning from Friday through the Championship match on Sunday, at 4:00 p.m.
Tournament Overview
The tournament kicks off tomorrow with two quarterfinal matches. The first match will feature #4 Presbyterian College and #5 UNC Asheville. As the #1 seed, Winthrop has a first-round bye and will play the winner of this match at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The second quarterfinal match will be between #3 Campbell and #6 Charleston Southern at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to the semi-final round against #2 High Point, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
A Look At UNC Asheville
During regular season play, the Eagles swept UNC Asheville on the road and beat them in four sets at home. The Bulldogs have been led by all-conference selection, Julia Borges, all season. The right-side is maintaining 3.02 kills per set and 3.67 points/s.
A Look At Presbyterian College
Winthrop came out on top of Presbyterian College in both matches this season, the first, a four-set win at home, and the second, a three-set sweep on the road. In the 2018 season, the Blue Hose beat the Eagles twice in regular season, but failed to advance to the Big South Championships.
Setter/right-side, Erin Cooke, was placed on 2
nd Team All-Conference, along with libero, Erin Eulitz. The Blue Hose ended the regular season on a high note with a sweep of High Point on the road.
Catching Up With the Eagles
The Eagles finished the regular season a perfect 14-0 and were crowned Big South Regular Season Champions for the first time since 2006.
Chuck Rey was named the 2019 Big South Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Winthrop is also in the top 100 of the latest Division I AVCA national rankings.
Siani Yamaguchi was named 2019 Big South Player of the Year as well as First-Team All-Conference honors.
Nikkia Benitez joined her on the first team and
Morgan Bossler and
Makayla Doyle were named Second-Team All-Conference. Doyle was also placed on the All-Academic team.
