Spartanburg, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball moves to 4-0 in conference play and continues their now nine-match win streak. The Eagles finished the weekend with a 3-1 win over USC Upstate (23-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-12) this afternoon. This is the first 4-0 start to conference play, and the first nine-match win streak, since the 2007 season when the Eagles went undefeated in conference.
How it Happened
The home team jumped out on the Eagles early in the set but a 4-0 run gave Winthrop the advantage. Upstate recovered with a couple points but another Winthrop run brought the Eagles to a 16-11 lead. The Spartans rallied for a run of their own to bring the score within two, 19-17. The set was tied 21-21 and the Spartans outscored the Eagles 4-2 to earn the one set advantage.
The Eagles found their momentum in the second set and continued that into the third, leading 12-3. Upstate went on mini runs of two and three points but could not close the gap.
The final two sets were all Eagles as they flexed their offensive power and stingy defense. The Eagles were able to utilize their deep bench allow playing time for several different players. The win brings the Eagles to 12-3, 4-0 and the loss drops Upstate to 4-10, 1-2.
