SERIES HISTORY VERSUS LONGWOOD
Winthrop and Longwood meet for the 13
th time as the Eagles lead the all-time series 11-1. The Eagles are 3-1 all-time in Farmville and have won the last five meetings with four of the wins coming by a single goal.
LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET
The two teams last met in Oct. 27, 2018 in Rock Hill as the Eagles celebrated "Senior Night" with a 4-1 victory. Winthrop struck in the 13
th minute as
Alfie Rogers scored off a cross from
Michael Smith. The Lancers evened the match just before halftime on a Willy Miezan goal off a cross. Rogers netted his second of the game in the 66
th minute as he converted a penalty for the lead. Leif Estevez scored the next two goals as his first provided some insurance in the 80
th minute as he curled a shot into the top right corner from inside the box.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
Coming off a 1-0 loss at USC Upstate on Saturday and sitting at 5-6 on the year. Looking for their first conference win, the Lancers have lost 2-of-3 league games by a goal including a 2-1 OT loss to Presbyterian College at home on Oct. 5. Longwood is 3-2 during midweek games and have won the last two over Wofford and George Mason. Of the six losses on the year, five have been one-goal games. Mikel Abando leads the team in scoring with seven goals (14 points) while Ander Etxaniz is second with 11 points (5g, 1a). Jacob Reimers has seen the majority of work in goal posting a 5-6 record with a 1.08 goals against average. The Lancers have 18 goals on the year with 13 of them coming after halftime.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Eagles dropped a hard fought contest at home against league-leading Campbell last week and are now 0-3 in the league. Winthrop grabbed an early lead in the game but the Camels broke through in the 65
th minute and scored two more goals over the final 12:19 for the 3-1 win. Center back
Andreas Jackson scored his first collegiate goal in the game and became the team's ninth different goal scorer this season.
Jordan Walshaw picked up his 5
th assist of the season as he is tied for the conference lead in assists per game and second in overall assists. Walshaw enters the week 25
th nationally in total assists. The Eagles are three points behind 6
th place where Radford and USC Upstate currently sit. Those same two teams play each other on Wednesday so a win would keep the Eagles within three points of the final spot for the conference tournament.
10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 2009 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
This season the Eagles celebrate the 10
th anniversary of the 2009 Big South Conference Championship team. The Eagles were coming off a championship in 2008 as it lost some of the greatest players in the history of the program. The Eagles were still loaded with talent and after dropping the opener 3-1 at North Carolina State, they won five in a row. Heading into the Big South Tournament the Eagles were struggling, having lost three straight (outscored 10-1). Winthrop, seeded fourth, defeated Gardner-Webb in penalties to advance to the semifinals and then advanced to the championship after defeating top-seeded Coastal Carolina 4-2 in penalties. The Eagles went on to defeat Liberty 2-1 in the championship game, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. Winthrop went on to lose 3-2 at 20
th-ranked Duke in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup.
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
The Eagles were voted 7
th in the 2019 Big South Conference preseason poll. Winthrop returns nine players that started at least eight games from a team that was 3-5 in the league last year. The Eagles finished in 7
th last season, a point out of tying Longwood and USC Upstate for 6
th. Defending regular-season champion High Point is the preseason favorite while Radford and Campbell tied for 2
nd in the poll.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Eagles return to Eagle Field on Saturday, Oct. 19 as they'll host Radford at 5 p.m. in a key league contest for both teams.
