Women's Basketball Downs Campbell 59-46, Earns First Big South Road Victory Since 2015

BUIES CREEK, NC – Three Eagles finished in double figures Tuesday night as the Winthrop women's basketball team downed the Campbell Camels 59-46, picking up the program's first road conference victory since February of 2015.

Winthrop improved to 3-2 in Big South play and 7-9 overall with the victory while Campbell fell to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Campbell opened the game with a three-pointer only 15 seconds into the contest, led for a total of 59 seconds and then never overcame the Eagles the remainder of the night.  Angela Coello Perez scored seven points in the first quarter as the Eagles led 16-12 after the opening 10 minutes.

Coello Perze opened the second quarter with five more points in the first 1:13 of the second quarter as Winthrop pushed its lead to double digits.  Quality free-throw shooting by the Eagles allowed them to increase their lead to 20 points at 38-18 heading into halftime.

In the first three minutes of the second half Winthrop continued its offensive attack, pushing its lead to 27 points with 7:09 remaining.  Campbell was able to slowly cut into the Eagle lead, getting the deficit down to 16 points at 52-36 with 10 minutes remaining.

Scoring slowed on both sides in the fourth quarter as the two sides combined for only 17 points.  The Camels couldn't gain much momentum as the Eagles took the 59-46 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Coello Perez finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes on the court.  Kem Nwabudu recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 11 boards.  Jah'che Whitfield tallied her fifth straight game in double figures with 11 points while Anika Riley pulled down 10 rebounds.

Winthrop shot 43 percent from the field including 56 percent from three-point range.  Campbell shot only 30 percent from the floor and 28 percent from beyond the arc.  The Eagles outrebounded the Camels 41-34.

Winthrop finishes its three-game road stretch Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
