BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Winthrop baseball (23-27, 14-10 Big South Conference) was held to just two hits in a 5-0 loss to league-leading Campbell (29-21, 19-5 Big South Conference) in the series finale rubber game Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Winthrop started off the 1
st with baserunners, with
Mitch Spires getting on due to hit-by-pitch and a
Tyler Halstead single advancing him to second, but a groundout would end the scoring threat.
-
Scout McFalls recorded the Eagles' second and only other hit of the afternoon in the 3
rd, a double to left center, and he would move to third on a ground out, but the Eagles were unable to get the run home.
-Starting right-hander
Daniel Willcutt sat down the Camels in order in each of the first three innings.
-In the bottom of the 4
th, the Camels got on the board with a pair of singles, a balk and an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.
-The Eagles went down in order in the 4
th, 5
th, 6
th, 7
th, 8
th and 9
th innings, failing to get another baserunner on.
-Campbell added a solo homer in the 6
th and a groundout RBI in the 7
th for a 4-0 lead that would bring
Jason Crumley to the mound in relief.
-The Camels plated one additional run on an issued walk in the 8
th to go ahead 5-0.
NOTABLES
-The loss marks just the second shutout loss for Winthrop on the season. The squad also owns three shutout victories.
-Winthrop drops to 7-20 on the season in road games.

Mitch Spires has reached base in a team-high 22-consecutive games.
-Senior RHP
Daniel Willcutt recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in the outing.
