ATLANTA, Ga. – A remarkable season for Winthrop women's tennis came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as No. 4 Georgia Tech earned a 4-0 victory over the Eagles. Winthrop finishes the season with a 20-6 record overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Winthrop lost the doubles point for just the sixth time on the season as Georgia Tech earned 6-1 wins on courts two and three. On court one, No. 23
Megan Kauffman and
Lauren Proctor faced the No. 1 doubles duo in the country in Georgia Tech's Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones. The match would go unfinished as the Yellow Jackets clinched the doubles point with Hourigan and Jones leading 4-2.
-In singles play, Georgia Tech continued its momentum, earning first set wins on all six courts, but the Eagles battled back in the second sets.
-On court one, No. 37
Lauren Proctor took on No. 14 Paige Hourigan, with Hourigan winning the first set 6-2. In the second, Proctor jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Hourigan pushed back for a 5-5 tie. Proctor held on to go up 6-5 on a deuce point and won the set 7-5 on a break. The hard-fought match would go unfinished as the team score would be decided on other courts, ending with Proctor ahead 1-0 in the third set.
-Georgia Tech would pull ahead 2-0 with a win on court four. Freshman
Tayla Van Eck held off No. 125 Ida Jarlskog in the second set, down 1-5, but winning two straight before Jarlskog secured a 6-3 second set win.
-On court three,
Megan Kauffman fell 6-1 in the first set, but stormed back in the second set for a 5-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets weren't going down without a fight either, and GT's Johnnise Renaud pushed the set to a 5-5 tie. Kauffman went up 6-5 on a hold, but Renaud tied it up at 6-6 to force a tiebreaker, which she won 7-4 to give Georgia Tech a 3-0 team lead.
-On court two,
Alisa Soloveva took on No. 60 Kenya Jones, with Jones taking the first set 6-3. Soloveva bounced back in the second, going up 5-4 on a break. She would fall behind 5-6 as Jones held serve, but stayed alive on a deuce point that would have been match point for the overall match to take the set to 6-6 and a tiebreaker. Her match would end unfinished at 2-2 in the second set tiebreaker.
-Tech would clinch the match a few minutes later on court five.
Aida Kelic fell 6-4, 6-4, with both sets ending in heartbreaking fashion with match points on deciding deuce points.

Ellie Burns' court six match would go unfinished with her tied 5-5 in the second set.

-Winthrop has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 16 times in program history, with today's appearance in the Second Round marking the first in program history.
-Friday's First Round win was the first in program history and the first over a nationally ranked team this season. With today's loss, the Eagles are 1-3 against Top 25 teams this season.
-Winthrop finishes the season at 20-6 overall, including its 20
th Big South Conference Championship title and an undefeated 8-0 Big South Conference regular season.
