Westbrooks, Gilreath Combine For Eight Hits As Eagles Split DH At PC Friday Afternoon

CLINTON, SC— Winthrop softball split a doubleheader at Presbyterian College as it captured the opening game 4-2 before falling 5-1 in the nightcap, Friday at the PC Softball Complex.

RECORDS: Winthrop (14-20, 4-7 Big South), Presbyterian College (3-30, 1-10 Big South)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Ashley Westbrooks (4-for-7, R, RBI), Ansley Gilreath (4-for-7, 2RBI, 2 2B)
 
WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second
  • With one out and a runner on first, the Eagles had back-to-back singles to load the bases
  • Shayna Covington stepped in and hit a soft grounder toward short as the shortstop tried to field and throw home for the force out but bobbled it as everyone was safe
  • Ashley Westbrooks then singled to left to score Tori Walker and put the Eagles up 2-0
  • PC tied the game 2-2 in the fourth as Ansley Wilbanks came through with a loop single to left with the bases loaded and two outs
  • Winthrop answered right back as Westbrooks got things going with a one-out single
  • Morgan Lowers followed with a walk and both moved over to second and third on a passed ball
  • Blake Wallert hit a shallow fly ball to right but the right fielder made the catch and Westbrooks raced home to beat the throw for a 3-0 lead
  • Ansley Gilreath followed with a single to center, scoring Lowers for the 4-2 lead
  • The Blue Hose tried to respond in the bottom of the fifth but Kiley Majette struck out the final two batters with runners at the corners
  • Majette earned the win in the circle with her 13th complete game of the year and improved to 8-9 after allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts
  • Winthrop had nine hits and left six runners on base while the Blue Hose had six hits and stranded seven 
Game 2
  • Things started off well for the Eagles in the second game as Gilreath delivered a two-out RBI double that scored Wallert from first
  • In the bottom of the first Wilbanks and Macy Hyatt had back-to-back singles
  • Camryn Alverson stepped in and laid down a squeeze that scored Wilbanks
  • After a sacrifice bunt by Harris to move the runners to second and third, Presley Bissett came through with a double to left with two outs for a 3-1 lead
  • The Blue Hose added two more runs with two outs as Jonnie Petree singled with two outs to get things started
  • After Wilbanks singled again, Hyatt singled on a soft liner to shallow right, scoring both baserunners and pushing the lead to 5-1
  • With one out in the fourth the Eagles loaded the bases but were unable to chew away at the PC lead after a pop up and grounding into a fielder's choice
  • Eagles had another chance to get back in the game in the fifth as Westbrooks walked and Lowers singled with one out but Wallert and Gilreath both struck out to end the threat
  • Winthrop gave one last effort in the seventh as Shayna Covington and Westbrooks singled with one out, but a Lowers strikeout and Wallert pop up ended the game
  • Madyson Watson got the loss in the circle after allowing all five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings
  • Sabrina Shroades relived Watson and tossed 4.1 innings allowing no runs and just one hit 
EXTRA BASES
  • In the first game of the doubleheader Westbrooks had three hits for her 11th multi-hit game of the year
  • It was the 4th time this season Westbrooks had three hits in a game
  • Gilreath had two hits in each of the doubleheader games as she now has seven multi-hit games on the year and had her first two doubles of the year with one in each game
  • Winthrop had baserunners in the second game, but stranded eight total and was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position (0-for-2 with bases loaded) 
ON DECK
Winthrop and the Blue Hose will play the final game of the series on Sunday, Apr. 8 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
