Lacrosse Opens Big South Tournament At Home Against Longwood Saturday At 1 p.m.

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team earned the third seed in the Big South Tournament and will host the sixth-seeded Longwood Lancers Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field.

EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop closed the regular season with a 23-11 victory on the road over Gardner-Webb.  The Eagles were led by a record-breaking performance from Kristen Shriver.  Shriver set a single-game Big South record with 10 goals on only 11 shots while also adding two assists. 
 
The Eagles finished the regular season with a 12-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Big South for the third seed.  Winthrop is 4-0 all-time in Big South quarterfinal matches.
 
Multiple Eagles continue to be ranked highly in statistical categories in both the Big South and the NCAA.  Big South Offensive Player of the Year, Nicole Beatson, leads the Big South and the NCAA in goals (75) and goals per game (4.41).  Shriver is fourth in the NCAA in total assists (44) and seventh in assists per game (2.59).  Katherine Judge leads the Big South in draw controls per game (7.18) and ranks seventh in the NCAA.  As a team, Winthrop leads the Big South in draw controls per game (14.59).
 
CHASING HISTORY
Nicole Beatson is nearing the top of the Big South single-season charts for both goals and points.  Beatson's 75 goals this season puts her only three behind the current record of 78 set in 2015 by former Eagle Jenna Kasmarik.  Beatson has currently tied the Big South single-season record for points with 93.  The record was previously held by Katie McCugh of Longwood.
 
SCOUTING LONGWOOD
Longwood finished the regular season with a 7-10 overall record and a 2-5 Big South mark.  The Lancers picked up conference victories over Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian.
 
Kaitlin Luccarelli led the Lancers offensively with 43 goals this season.  Riley Dolan leads the team with 87 points on 26 goals and 61 assists.  Dolan's 61 assists leads both the Big South and NCAA.  In goal, Imani West has played all but 38 minutes this season, allowing more than 14 goals per game while making 42 percent of her saves.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST LONGWOOD
Winthrop downed the Lancers 20-13 earlier this season at Eagle Field.  The Eagles are 4-2 all-time against the Lancers, having won the last four.  This will be the first time the two sides have met in the conference tournament.
 
POST-SEASON AWARDS
The Big South announced its annual award winners Thursday and Nicole Beatson was voted the Offensive Player of the Year.  She was joined on the First Team by Katherine Judge and Alaina GiraniKristen Shriver earned a spot on the Second Team while Jordyn Elliott was named to the All-Academic Team
 
WHAT'S UP NEXT
The winner of Saturday's quarterfinal will advance to the Big South semifinals on Friday, May 4 at High Point.  The winner will face the second-seeded Liberty Flames at 7 p.m.  The championship is set for Sunday, May 6 at 12 p.m. at High Point's Vert Stadium.
