ROCK HILL, S.C. – Behind a season-high eight innings and nine strikeouts from junior
Nate Pawelczyk, Winthrop baseball (18-22, 10-6 Big South Conference) earned a 2-1 series opening win over UNC Asheville (10-27, 5-11 Big South Conference) Friday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Bulldogs got on the board first with a solo homer in the top of the 2
nd by Joe Gruszka. It was the only run Pawelczyk would give up, and the ace would give up just six hits on the day.
-The Eagles would get something going in the 4
th as
Brandon Fite hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Mitch Spires knocked a single to center to get Fite to third.
Dillon Morton kept it going with a single to right to score Fite and send Spires to third.
Cale Gibson was unable to get on base, but his ground out still scored Spires for a 2-1 lead.

Tyler Halstead led off with a double in the 7
th, but the Eagles couldn't get him across.
-Winthrop mounted another scoring threat in the 8
th with back-to-back singles by
Jake Sullivan and Fite. Sullivan would get as far as third on a fielder's choice put in play by
Dillon Morton, but a Halstead groundout ended the threat.

Dalton Whitaker came to the mound for the 9
th to close it out leading 2-1.

Nate Pawelczyk matched his season-long going 8.0 innings on the mound and posting a season-high nine strikeouts. Both numbers also matched his career-highs set in 2017.

Mitch Spires has recorded at least one hit in 11 of the last 12 games, going 2-for-4 with one run scored in the win.

Brandon Fite put together a 3-for-4 day with one run scored.
