COACHES QUOTE
Head Coach Mark Cooke~
"Kiley threw a great ballgame. We adjusted to their left-handed slappers, who were just punching the ball so we started going inside to take that away from them. We had some really good swings out there. We're getting there, it's the little stuff starting to come together. We played good defense and made all the right moves. The best thing I thought we did today was play together as a complete team."
WHAT HAPPENED
- Junior Blake Wallert provided all the offense the Eagles needed in the bottom of the first inning as she hit an opposite field, three-run home run
- Ashley Westbrooks led off the game with a single and moved to second after Lowers followed with a bunt single before Wallert hit the shot to right
- Kiley Majette tossed her second straight shutout as she held the Youngstown State offense in check
- Majette also received a couple of nice diving defensive plays
- The first came in the top of the 4th with a runner on first and two outs as Ashley Westbrooks jumped up on a soft pop up down the third base line and dove to make the catch that ended the inning
- In the top of the sixth the Penguins had a runner at third after back-to-back sacrifices
- The next batter hit a soft liner into center field and Lowers darted for the ball and dove forward to make the catch, saving the run and ending the inning
- Majette improved to 5-2 on the year and now has 47 strikeouts to six walks in 46 innings
- In the fourth inning the Eagles made it 4-0 as Tori Walker doubled with two outs and then A.G. Gardner singled to center as Walker came around to score
EXTRA BASES
- Wallert's home run extended her hitting streak to a career-best seven games and Westbrooks has now hit safely in three straight
- Majette didn't allow a hit until the third inning as she threw 13 consecutive innings without allowing a hit
- Majette has only allowed one earned run in the last 25 innings and has 25 strikeouts to just one walk in that span
- She has allowed two runs in that span, but one of the runs came in the 9th under the international tie-breaker
- The Eagles went 4-1 over the weekend with the only loss coming to Albany, 1-0
- Winthrop is now 14-2 in the Winthrop/adidas Tournament since 2015
