FARMVILLE, VA – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped its regular-season finale Saturday, falling 90-60 on the road to the Longwood Lancers.
The Eagles close the regular season with a 2-16 conference mark and a 3-26 overall record. Winthrop goes into the conference tournament next week as the 10th seed and will play the 7th seed Gardner-Webb Thursday at 8 p.m. at Liberty.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter. Longwood built as much as a seven point lead. Winthrop cut it down to one but the Lancers finished the first quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 23-17 after the opening 10 minutes. Longwood increased its lead to double-digits midway through the second quarter and held a 46-38 edge at the half.
The Lancers slowly built their lead back up throughout the third quarter. Longwood led 72-54 heading into the final quarter. Winthrop managed only six points over the final 10 minutes as the Lancers went on for the 90-60 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Courtney Hagaman led the Eagles with 15 points while Airneisha Gamble added 12. Miquela Santoro pulled down eight rebounds to the lead the team.
Winthrop shot 61 percent from the field in the first half but only 23 percent in the second half. The Eagles went 3-for-13 from the three-point line. Longwood outrebounded Winthrop 42-31.
