COACHES QUOTE
Head Coach Mark Cooke~
"I told our players that their first three hitters put so much pressure on a defense and we didn't handle it well. But we swung the bats, put runs on the board and put runners on the bases. We just couldn't handle their speed 1-3 but it's something to build on, working to get better. The scoreboard doesn't reflect how competitive we were. It was a great thing by Donna to come down here in my final year to play us, which makes me happy."

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Katie Bailiff hit her first homerun of the season with a two-run shot down the left field line just over the top of the fence
  • Winthrop loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but Kiley Majette grounded to first and UNC turned a double play coming home first and then back to first to end the inning
  • The lead increased to 5-0 as the Tar Heels added one in the second and two more in the top of the third
  • The Eagles battled back in the bottom of the third with four runs to make it a one-run game
  • With one out, the Winthrop had three consecutive hits to load the bases for the second time in three innings
  • Then Keleigh Romine made it four straight hits when she doubled off the centerfield fence to make it a 5-2 game
  • Kiley Majette followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Wallert from third and put runners at the corners with one out
  • Madyson Watson hit a grounder toward second base that scored Romine but Watson reached on a fielding error by the second baseman as her RBI made it a one-run game at 5-4
  • UNC added three more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth
  • Winthrop finished with four runs on six hits and stranded six
  • Majette took the loss in the circle after allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings to fall to 7-7
  • North Carolina's Brittany Pickett earned the win in relief as she tossed 6.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts to improve to 15-5

EXTRA BASES
  • Romine extended her streak of reaching base to 11 straight
  • The Eagles loaded the bases twice in the game and Romine nearly hit the team's second grand slam in as many days as her shot in the third hit halfway up the wall
  • Winthrop finished 2-for-6 in the game with runners in scoring position while the Tar Heels were 7-for-16
  • Blake Wallert has now hit safely in four straight games while Ashley Westbrooks has done so in three straight
