ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team won its fifth straight contest Thursday evening, rolling to a 20-7 victory over the Wofford Terriers at Eagle Field
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (6-3) got off to a hot start offensively, scoring the first four goals of the contest in the opening 5:04 of the match. Wofford (0-7) pulled two goals back and trailed 4-2 with 19:19 left in the half.
The Eagles didn't allow the Terriers to gain any momentum as Winthrop scored only a minute later which started a string of six straight goals to put the Eagles up 10-2. Over the final 7:40 of the half, the Eagles outscored Wofford 3-2 and took a 13-4 lead into the break.
Less than a minute into the second half Wofford found the back of the net again. After the Terrier goal, the Eagles took full control of the contest, scoring the next seven goals to open its largest lead of the match at 20-5 with 8:32 remaining. The Terriers scored the last two of the contest to reach the 20-7 final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
For the fifth consecutive game, Nicole Beatson tallied at least seven points as she finished with eight on the evening on seven goals and one assist. Kristen Shriver added four assists while Katie Clark scored three times. Katherine Judge, Ellie Marindin and Ann Marie Langrehr each scored twice.
Winthrop outshot the Terriers 50-10 for the game including 31 shots in the first half. The Eagles dominated the hustle categories, winning draw controls 24-5 and ground balls 21-12.
