Beatson's Six Goals Lead Eagles To 16-14 Victory Over Coastal Carolina Tuesday

CONWAY, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 16-14 victory Tuesday evening over the Coastal Carolina Chaticleers.

The Eagles won their third straight contest, improving to 4-3 on the season while the Chanticleers fell to 1-5 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half was a series of runs for both sides.  Coastal scored the opening goal but Winthrop responded with three straight, one each from Katie Clark, Allie Yeager and Katherine Judge.  The Chanticleers answered back with four in a row, taking a 5-3 with 15 minutes left in the first half.

The last 12 minutes of the opening half, were owned by the Eagles and specifically, senior Nicole Beatson.  Beatson scored five straight goals, four unassisted, to give Winthrop an 8-5 lead at the break.

Coastal Carolina started the second half by scoring the first two goals to pull within one at 8-7.  The Eagles quickly stopped the Chanticleers' momentum, scoring three straight to regain an 11-7 advantage.

With the Eagles holding a 13-8 lead, Coastal Carolina netted four straight goals to pull within one with 9:44 on the clock.  Over the final 10 minutes the Eagles clung to no more than a two-goal lead.  In the final 90 seconds, Clark gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion that they didn't relinquish.
