Eagles Head To High Point Saturday Night For Key Road Contest

Winthrop Has Won Eight Of Its Last Nine Games

ROCK HILL, SC— There are five regular season games remaining as the Winthrop men's basketball hits the road for a key contest at High Point Saturday night as the two teams square off at 7 p.m. Winthrop is trying to keep pace with league-leading UNC Asheville, as it is just one game behind in the standings.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This is the second meeting this season as the two teams last met on Dec. 30 as the Eagles defeated the Panthers 76-60 in the league opener for both teams
  • Winthrop snagged its first win at the Millis Center since 2007 last season with an 80-74 victory
  • The Eagles have won three of the last five meetings, but High Point has won nine of the last 13  
THE GAME
  • Both teams enter the contest on two-game winning streaks
  • Winthrop is looking to keep pace with UNC Asheville in the league standings as the Eagles trail the Bulldogs by one game
  • Winthrop leads the Big South in scoring at 81.6 ppg while the Panthers are 4th at 73.6 ppg
  • High Point ranks second in the league behind Liberty in scoring defense at 66.4 ppg
  • Winthrop and High Point rank second and third in scoring margin and field goal percentage defense in the Big South  
WINTHROP       
  • Have won two straight after picking up a fifth straight home win on Feb. 7 against Presbyterian College
  • Eagles dropped their last home game but have won three of the last four on the road
  • Xavier Cooks led the Eagles with 18 points in the win over PC and continues to lead the team with 17.3 ppg
  • In the win at the Millis Center last season, Cooks had 21 points, 11 rebounds and three assists
  • Cooks is one of five Eagles averaging double-figures in league play
  • Bjorn Broman (12.9), Adam Pickett (11.3), Anders Broman (11.0) and Josh Ferguson (10.4) are the other four
  • In their last game, the Eagles clamped down defensively holding Presbyterian College to 49 points
  • That tied a season-low and is the 8th time the Eagles held a league opponent under 70 points and fifth time holding them to 60 or fewer points
  • A victory over the Panthers would give the Eagles a 10th league win for the 5th straight season  
HIGH POINT
  • Panthers have won two straight and coming off a 61-60 win at Radford on Wednesday
  • This season the Panthers are 9-2 at home and 5-1 in Big South play
  • Andre Fox and Jahaad Proctor lead the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg while Brandon Kamga is the third player on the team scoring in double-figures at 11.1
  • Fox and Proctor are the top two three-point threats on the team, combining for 95 of the team's 136 made threes
  • Fox led the team with 14 points in the win at Radford and has led the Panthers 13 times (team is 6-7 in those games)
  • Proctor, who missed five games during non-conference action, has seven 20-point games
  • High Point leads the Big South in steals per game while forcing 15.0 turnovers per game 
 
LIVING IN THE 80'S
  • The Eagles scored 80 or more points in eight straight games which is a school record (came to an end at VCU)
  • The Eagles are 10-2 this year when scoring 80 or more in a game and since the arrival of head coach Pat Kelsey the Eagles are 61-11 when hitting the 80-mark
  • Of the 11 losses when scoring 80 or more, seven of them have come against Big South opponents (3 in OT) and three against Power 5 opponents
  • Streak of 80 or more points on the road came to an end at four straight as the Eagles have now hit that mark in seven of the last 13 dating back to last season
  • After scoring 80 or more in eight of the first 10 games, Eagles went six straight games without reaching 80 before they posted 90 in the win over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 15 
BIG SOUTH WEEKLY PLAYER HONORS
  • Xavier Cooks has been tabbed the Big South Player of the Week four times this season (Dec. 4/Dec. 11/Jan. 22/Jan. 29)
  • He earned his fourth honor on Jan. 29 for helping the Eagles to two wins and moving into a three-way tie for first in the league standings
  • During that week he averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in wins over Longwood and Campbell
  • He's now earned back-to-back weekly honors twice this season and has a career total of six
  • Cooks scored a career-high 31 points at Georgia that included five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal to earn his second league honor of the year
  • Cooks grabbed his first weekly honor of the season by averaging 17.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in a week he recorded his first ever triple-double (11 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists vs. Reinhardt)
  • Kyle Zunic was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Nov. 20 after he averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds against Colorado State and Central Penn 
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • Xavier Cooks is establishing his name in many categories of the Winthrop record book
  • Against Radford Cooks became the program's all-time leader in rebounds, pass Charles Brunson's mark of 913 (a record that stood for 36 years)
  • Cooks became the 4th Eagle all-time to reach 1,600 career points as he currently ranks 4th with 1,661 and now ranks 3rd on the all-time list
  • Cooks also ranks first all-time in blocked shots (199), 1st in rebounds (919), 4th in field goals made (617), 5th in free throws made (334), 6th in free throws attempted (480), and 7th in career scoring average (13.8)
  • Bjorn Broman now has 152 career threes (11th all-time) as he's 8 away from cracking the Top 10
  • Broman is also 9th all-time in career three-point percentage (.378) while his brother Anders is 7th at .392

Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season.
