ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop men's basketball goes for a fifth straight home win Wednesday evening as it welcomes Presbyterian College to the Winthrop Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This is the second meeting this season as the Eagles used an 11-0 second-half run to capture an 81-68 win at Presbyterian College on Jan. 21
  • Winthrop led 34-33 at the break in that game and has now led at halftime in eight straight meetings
  • The Eagles are 22-12 all-time against the Blue Hose and have won nine straight meetings
  • Winthrop is 15-3 against the Blue Hose in Big South regular season meetings
  • This series dates back to Jan. 25, 1979 when the teams first met in Clinton, SC as the Eagles fell 83-74 
 
THE GAME
  • Eagles are looking for a second straight win and fifth straight at home as they look to keep pace with league-leading UNC Asheville (who is one game up in the standings)
  • Eagles coming off an 18-point win over Radford, who they are now tied with for second in the league
  • This matchup features the top two teams in the league for three-pointers per game as Winthrop leads the Big South at 9.9 and PC is second at 8.9
  • Winthrop also leads the league in points per game, field goal percentage, rebounds per game, assists, and assist/turnover ratio
  • Winthrop is 9-2 at home this season while PC is 2-9 on the road with both road wins coming in league play 
 
WINTHROP       
  • Eagles are 4-1 in the last five games and have won four straight home games by double-digits
  • Balance remains the key to the Eagles offense as five players are averaging double-figures in league play
  • Xavier Cooks leads the team in scoring at 17.3 ppg and 18.3 ppg in league play
  • Cooks became the program's all-time rebounder in the game against Radford as he passed Charles Brunson's 36-year old record of 913
  • Cooks also became the first player in the history of the Big South Conference to have 1,500 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists, 175 blocks and 100 steals in a career
  • In addition to Cooks, Bjorn Broman (13.5), Anders Broman (11.3), Adam Pickett (10.8) and Josh Ferguson (10.6) are the other four scoring in double-figures against league competition
  • Bjorn Broman is having a career year as he's leading the team in three-point field goals made with 62 and is shooting 48 percent behind the arc
  • Bjorn Broman's three-point field goal percentage and his assist/turnover ratio rank in the Top 10 nationally
  • Eagles have held three straight league opponents to 64 or fewer points at home and two of them under 60 
 
PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE
  • The Blue Hose are looking to avoid back-to-back losses
  • Averaging 57.7 ppg in six games on the road in Big South play
  • Led by senior Reggie Dillard's 16.3 ppg while Devon Bell is scoring 13.0 ppg
  • Bell had 15 points and eight assists in the first meeting with Winthrop while Dillard chipped in with 13
  • Dillard has posted double-figures in six straight games including a career-high 37 points against Liberty on Jan. 27 behind eight three-pointers
  • Blue Hose are 8th in the league in scoring (68.6) and 5th in scoring defense (71.7)
  • PC is one of the top teams in the league behind the arc and does so with balance as six different players have 10 or more triples in 12 league games
  • PC has made 19 more threes than its opponents in league play and has more free throw attempts (186-183) 
 
LIVING IN THE 80'S
  • The Eagles scored 80 or more points in eight straight games which is a school record (came to an end at VCU)
  • The Eagles are 10-2 this year when scoring 80 or more in a game and since the arrival of head coach Pat Kelsey the Eagles are 61-11 when hitting the 80-mark
  • Of the 11 losses when scoring 80 or more, seven of them have come against Big South opponents (3 in OT) and three against Power 5 opponents
  • Streak of 80 or more points on the road came to an end at four straight as the Eagles have now hit that mark in seven of the last 13 dating back to last season
  • After scoring 80 or more in eight of the first 10 games, Eagles went six straight games without reaching 80 before they posted 90 in the win over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 15
 
BIG SOUTH WEEKLY PLAYER HONORS
  • Xavier Cooks has been tabbed the Big South Player of the Week four times this season (Dec. 4/Dec. 11/Jan. 22/Jan. 29)
  • He earned his fourth honor on Jan. 29 for helping the Eagles to two wins and moving into a three-way tie for first in the league standings
  • During that week he averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in wins over Longwood and Campbell
  • He's now earned back-to-back weekly honors twice this season and has a career total of six
  • Cooks scored a career-high 31 points at Georgia that included five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal to earn his second league honor of the year
  • Cooks grabbed his first weekly honor of the season by averaging 17.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in a week he recorded his first ever triple-double (11 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists vs. Reinhardt)
  • Kyle Zunic was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Nov. 20 after he averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds against Colorado State and Central Penn
 
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • Xavier Cooks is establishing his name in many categories of the Winthrop record book
  • Against Radford Cooks became the program's all-time leader in rebounds, pass Charles Brunson's mark of 913 (a record that stood for 36 years)
  • Cooks became the 4th Eagle all-time to reach 1,600 career points as he currently ranks 4th with 1,621 and trails 3rd place by 39 points
  • Cooks also ranks first all-time in blocked shots (197), 1st in rebounds (915), 4th in field goals made (611), 5th in free throws made (329), 6th in free throws attempted (473), and 7th in career scoring average (13.8)
  • Bjorn Broman now has 150 career threes (11th all-time) as he's 10 away from cracking the Top 10
  • Broman is also 9th all-time in career three-point percentage (.381) while his brother Anders is 7th at .396
 
WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and also airs on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
