ASHEVILLE, NC – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped a road Big South contest Saturday, falling 63-51 to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (2-19, 1-9), jumped out to a small early 4-2 lead over the Bulldogs before UNC Asheville went on an 11-0 run to go up 13-4. The Eagles stopped the Bulldog run with six quick points from Courtney Hagaman on back-to-back three pointers. UNC Asheville held a 20-15 edge after the opening 10 minutes.
In a lower-scoring second quarter, UNC Asheville (11-10, 8-2) had to fight off a Winthrop charge. The Eagles got the deficit down to three before the Bulldogs increased their lead back to 13 before holding a 34-23 lead at the break.
Asheville opened the third quarter on an 10-0 run, opening a 21-point edge halfway through the period. Winthrop was able to get the deficit down to 14, heading into the final 10 minutes. Winthrop battled hard in the final quarter, getting the deficit down to single digits on multiple occasions but couldn't gain enough momentum to make a solid charge at the Bulldogs as it fell 63-51.

Courtney Hagaman led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Her nine field goals made and .563 shooting percentage with both season-highs for the junior. Anika Riley and Ronata Rogers each tallied eight points while Rogers led the Eagles with eight rebounds.
Winthrop shot 34 percent from the field but managed only three made three-pointers on 13 attempts. UNC Asheville hit 42 percent of its shots from the field and 36 from three-point range. The two sides finished even on rebounds, both pulling down 40 boards.

The Eagles return home on Tuesday to the Winthrop Coliseum where they were victorious in their last home contest. Winthrop will host Presbyterian at 7 p.m.
