ROCK HILL, SC— Strong defensive effort, sharp shooting leads Winthrop to a fourth straight home victory with a 75-57 win over Radford, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

FIRST HALF
- Both teams took a little bit to settle into the game, each committing some turnovers early as well as missing shots
- Five minutes in the game was tied 7-7 after Xavier Cooks knocked down a jumper in the paint
- Over the next four minutes the Eagles tried to open up a little bit of a lead, pushing it to five points at 13-8 behind a couple of Adam Pickett layups
- Radford came right back to grab the lead as Ed Polite Jr. got the run started with a three-point play and then Travis Fields Jr. drained a three
- The lead lasted 12 seconds when Pickett found Bjorn Broman open for three and the Eagles never trailed again
- That three propelled a 10-2 run by the Eagles as Anders Broman followed it with a three-point play and then Josh Ferguson and Cooks each scored inside to lead 23-16 with 6:39 left
- Once again Radford responded scoring six straight as Polite Jr. and Christian Bradford knocked down threes to make it a one-point game with 4:47 left
- The Eagles went on to outscore the Highlanders 13-3 in the final 4:47, which included seven straight to end the half
- Bjorn Broman hit a three to put the Eagles up 32-25 and after Ferguson went 1-for-2 at the line, Cooks drained a three with 37 seconds left for the 36-25 lead at the break
- Winthrop shot 55 percent in the first half while holding the Highlanders to 36 percent
- The two teams combined for 22 turnovers and 17 steals in the first half
- Winthrop made seven of its final nine shots of the half while Radford missed eight of its final 11 attempts
SECOND HALF
- Both teams shot the ball well to start the second half
- Winthrop made 11-of-14 shots while Radford hit its first six shots
- Winthrop seemed to have a response every time Radford tried to inch closer
- After the hot start, the Eagles turned up the defense and held Radford scoreless for a four minute span, turning a nine-point lead into a 15-point advantage
- Randy Phillips ended the drought with a stick back basket, but the Eagles came right back as Bjorn Broman hit a three for a 57-41 lead with 10:46 to play
- Winthrop consistently held a 15-18 point the rest of the way
- Winthrop shot even better from the floor in the second half than it did in the first by knocking down 58 percent, including 5-for-9 behind the arc
- Radford shot 43 percent and was 3-for-12 from three

- For the game the Eagles shot 57 percent while Radford shot 40 percent
- Winthrop and Radford combined to commit 40 turnovers
- The two teams also combined for 29 steals
- Xavier Cooks led all scorers with 22 points
- Radford finished with 22 points off turnovers while Winthrop had 20

- Eagles have now won four straight games at home and 52 of the last 60 at home against Big South opponents
- Xavier Cooks grabbed six rebounds and in the process became the program's all-time leader in rebounds with 915
- Cooks passes Charles Brunson, who pulled down 913 in his career as the record held for 36 years
- Cooks also became the first ever in the history of the Big South Conference with 1,500 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists, 175 blocks and 100 steals in a career
- This was the 15th straight home win in the month of February for the Eagles
- Anders Broman moved over the 700 career point mark as he scored eight in the game and now has 707
- Winthrop remained unbeaten when winning the battle of the boards as they are now 14-0 on the season
