SPARTANBURG, SC— Winthrop softball dropped a doubleheader at USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Classic.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the first as Kristen Wright singled through the hole at third, scoring Ansley Gilstrap, who led off the inning with a single
- Gilstrap walked to lead off the third inning, was sacrificed to second, stole third and then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead
- Blake Wallert cut the deficit in half in the 5th inning as she led off the frame with a solo home run to left
- In the bottom half of the fifth the Spartans scored four runs with two outs after Kiley Majette had retired the first two batters
- Wright doubled to get things started as Megan Obier provided a two-run double for a 4-1 lead and the Spartans added two more
- Majette suffered her first loss of the season after allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout
- USC Upstate's Erin Hill tossed six innings allowing one run on three hits with a walk and no strikeouts earned the win and improved to 4-0
Game 2
- Winthrop jumped on the Spartans in the top of the first with two runs as Westbrooks came through with a two-run single to right, scoring Morgan Lowers and Shayna Covington
- The lead was short-lived as USC Upstate came right back to score four runs in the bottom half of the first
- Just like the first game, the Spartans did their damage with two outs with the big hit coming off the bat of Brittany Case with a three-run shot to left
- USC Upstate added three more runs in the third and three more in the fifth
- Madyson Watson took the loss in the circle for the Eagles after allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout as she's now 1-2 on the year
- Christina Biggerstaff improved to 4-0 for the Spartans as she allowed two runs, walked one and struck out 11
EXTRA BASES
- Lowers hitting streak came to an end at 11 games
- USC Upstate received votes in both Top 25 national polls entering the week
ON DECK
The Eagles will travel to Greenville, SC to continue the Spartan Classic on Sunday as they will face Marshall at noon and Furman at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Furman.
