Eagles Looking To Extend Winning Streak, Host Longwood Sunday Afternoon

Sunday's Game Is "First Responders Appreciation Day" (Free Admission)

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop men's basketball will play two of its final three games of the regular season at home beginning with a contest against Longwood on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This is the second meeting of the season and the 13th all-time
  • Eagles won the first meeting 95-78 and have now won eight straight in the series
  • The 95 points were the most scored by Winthrop in the series
  • In the series, Winthrop is 9-0 all-time when scoring 70 or more points
  • In 12 meetings all-time the Eagles have averaged 78.1 ppg while Longwood has averaged 66.6 ppg 
THE GAME
  • Winthrop is currently tied for first place in the league standings with UNC Asheville and a win today could set up a showdown of first-place teams on Thursday, Feb. 22
  • Asheville's contest on Sunday won't be until 5:30 p.m. when it faces Charleston Southern on the road
  • Eagles currently have the league's longest winning streak at four games while Longwood is looking to end a nine-game losing streak
  • Winthrop is 10-2 at home this season and 6-1 against the league while Longwood is 1-11 on the road overall and 1-6 in the league
  • Against Gardner-Webb on Thursday the Eagles posted their second 90-point performance against the Runnin' Bulldogs this season (90 in both) as Winthrop boasts the top offense in the league at 81.2 per game
  • Winthrop still leads the Big South in scoring margin, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, blocked shots, assists per game and three-point field goals per game
  • Longwood and Winthrop are first and second in three-point field goal defensive percentage 
WINTHROP       
  • Have won four straight games, five straight at home and 10-of-11 contests
  • Are 11-4 in league play for the 3rd time in league history and have 11 league wins for the 11th time
  • The win over Gardner-Webb gave Winthrop a regular season sweep, which was their third of the season as it goes for a 4th sweep today
  • In 11 league wins the Eagles allow 63.2 ppg while allowing 80.8 ppg in the four losses
  • Xavier Cooks is coming off one of the best performances in the history of the program with 36 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, six blocks and three steals at Gardner-Webb
  • Cooks moved his team-leading scoring average to 18.2 on the year, which ranks second in the league
  • Cooks ranks in the Top 5 of scoring average, rebounding, field goal percentage, assists, assists per game, blocked shots and defensive rebounds (only player in league to be Top 5 in all of those categories)
  • At 19.5 ppg in 15 league games, Cooks has a chance to become just the second player in program history to average 20 or more points per game in league play
  • Eagles have five players averaging double-figures in league play as Cooks leads the way and joined by Anders Broman, Josh Ferguson, Adam Pickett, Bjorn Broman (all averaging 11 or more)
  • Winthrop had five players in double-figures in the win at Longwood led by Cooks with 26 while Anders Broman added 18, Kyle Zunic had 14, Bjorn Broman had 11 and Adam Pickett scored 10
  • Pickett continues to be a spark for the Eagles as he's averaging 10.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals over the last five games
  • A win would give Pat Kelsey his 120th overall victory as he's currently 119-68
  • Eagles have won 53 of their last 61 home games 
LONGWOOD
  • Coming off a 77-65 loss to Charleston Southern at home on Thursday for a ninth straight loss, four of which have come by seven points or less
  • Lancers have dropped two of their last three road games by five or fewer points falling by five at Presbyterian College and just three at Gardner-Webb
  • Isaiah Walton is coming off 24 points in the loss to the Buccaneers as he leads the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg
  • Walton has led the team in scoring in 13 of the 23 games he's played
  • B.K. Ashe is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 ppg and he led the Lancers in the first meeting with Winthrop as he scored 24 points
  • Charles Glover is scoring 8.6 ppg and the top three-point threat at 41 percent (41-for-99) 
LIVING IN THE 80'S
  • The Eagles scored 80 or more points in eight straight games which is a school record (came to an end at VCU)
  • The Eagles are 12-2 this year when scoring 80 or more in a game and since the arrival of head coach Pat Kelsey the Eagles are 63-11 when hitting the 80-mark
  • Of the 11 losses when scoring 80 or more, seven of them have come against Big South opponents (3 in OT) and three against Power 5 opponents
  • Streak of 80 or more points on the road came to an end at four straight as the Eagles have now hit that mark in nine of the last 15 dating back to last season
  • After scoring 80 or more in eight of the first 10 games, Eagles went six straight games without reaching 80 before they posted 90 in the win over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 15 
BIG SOUTH WEEKLY PLAYER HONORS
  • Xavier Cooks has been tabbed the Big South Player of the Week four times this season (Dec. 4/Dec. 11/Jan. 22/Jan. 29)
  • He earned his fourth honor on Jan. 29 for helping the Eagles to two wins and moving into a three-way tie for first in the league standings
  • During that week he averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in wins over Longwood and Campbell
  • He's now earned back-to-back weekly honors twice this season and has a career total of six
  • Cooks scored a career-high 31 points at Georgia that included five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal to earn his second league honor of the year
  • Cooks grabbed his first weekly honor of the season by averaging 17.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in a week he recorded his first ever triple-double (11 points, 15 rebounds, 11 assists vs. Reinhardt)
  • Kyle Zunic was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Nov. 20 after he averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds against Colorado State and Central Penn 
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • Xavier Cooks is establishing his name in many categories of the Winthrop record book
  • Against Radford Cooks became the program's all-time leader in rebounds, pass Charles Brunson's mark of 913 (a record that stood for 36 years)
  • Cooks became the 4th Eagle all-time to reach 1,600 career points and now the third player to reach 1,700 career points (1,717)
  • Cooks also ranks first all-time in blocked shots (209), 1st in rebounds (943), 2nd in field goals made (636), 5th in free throws made (347), 6th in free throws attempted (499), and T-6th in career scoring average (14.1)
  • Bjorn Broman now has 154 career threes (11th all-time) as he's 6 away from cracking the Top 10
  • Broman is also 9th all-time in career three-point percentage (.377) while his brother Anders is 7th at .398
 
WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and also airs on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
