Eagles Down High Point 82-70 On The Road For Third Straight Win

HIGH POINT, NC— Winthrop men's basketball made 28-of-33 free throws and shot 55 percent from the floor as it earned an 82-70 road win over High Point, Saturday night in the Millis Center.

FIRST HALF
  • Winthrop jumped out to an early 8-0 lead behind two threes from Bjorn Broman and two free throws from Xavier Cooks
  • High Point cut the deficit in half at 10-5, but Anders Broman fired back with a three
  • With the Eagles leading 15-9 after Jahaad Proctor hit a jumper, Winthrop reeled off seven straight points to push the lead to double-figures at 22-9 after Adam Pickett drove the lane and knocked down a contested jumper
  • Over the next seven minutes the Eagles kept their lead around 8-11 points
  • Winthrop led 32-31 after Denny Slay scored off a drive for High Point
  • Then the Eagles went on another 7-0 run to push the lead to 39-21 as the run was capped by an Anders Broman three that led to a timeout by High Point
  • The run was stopped by a free throw from Jordan Whithead as he went 1-for-2 at the line with 29 seconds left
  • The Eagles scored on their final possession as Adam Pickett drove and dished to Josh Ferguson for the dunk with three seconds and a 19-point lead at the break (41-22)
  • Winthrop shot 52 percent from the floor while holding High Point to 25 percent
  • The Eagles were tough on the boards with a 26-14 advantage 
SECOND HALF
  • It was a good start to the second half for the Eagles as Ferguson scored inside and then the Eagles drew a charge on the defensive end and Ferguson scored again to lead by 23 points
  • Proctor hit a three for High Point only to be matched by Anders Broman from the corner as the Eagles led 48-25 with 18:07 to play
  • Bjorn Broman put the Eagles up 59-39 after two free throws but High Point scored the next five points to cut it to 59-44
  • Winthrop got back-to-back stops on the defensive end and scored on the offensive end each time to push the lead to 63-44, forcing High Point to call timeout
  • High Point tried to chip away at the lead midway through the second half and got within 14 points with 9:09 remaining, but Pickett scored on a drive and Anders Broman drained a corner three to put the Eagles back on top by 19 (71-52)
  • Winthrop continued to hold a 14-19 point lead the rest of the way
  • Winthrop finished 18-of-20 from the foul line in the second half
  • Despite just 17 field goal attempts in the second half the Eagles shot 59 percent while High Point shot 50 percent 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop shot 55 percent while holding the Panthers to 37 percent
  • The Eagles had a +20 advantage on the glass at 42-22
  • Winthrop did commit 25 turnovers in the game that led to 24 points off turnovers for the Panthers
  • The Eagles were 8-for-15 behind the arc and also finished with 26 points in the paint
  • Bjorn Broman managed 16 points in the game, despite just taking four shots as he finished 10-for-11 at the charity stripe
  • Bjorn Broman also tied his career-high of seven rebounds
  • Anders Broman finished the game with 14 points as he was one of four players in double-figures
  • Adam Pickett just missed double-figures with eight points but he did set career-highs in assists (7) and rebounds (8)
  • Winthrop had 10 blocks in the game led by Cooks with four of them and Ferguson with three
  • Charles Falden gave the Eagles a lift off the bench with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting and 2-for-2 behind the arc 
NOTABLES
  • This was the 10th game this season the Eagles led by 10 or more points at the half as they are 10-0 in those games
  • This was the sixth game on the season the Eagles did not trail at all
  • The Eagles have now won 9-of-10 games and are guaranteed a winning record for a 5th straight season
  • Eagles sweep regular season series with High Point for first time since 2006-07 season
  • It is also the first time since the 2005-06, 2006-07 season in which the Eagles won back-to-back games at the Millis Center
  • Winthrop has won all four games in which Ferguson has recorded a double-double
  • Eagles have 29 blocks in the last four games (7.3 per game)
  • This season the Eagles are now 9-1 in games played on Saturday/Sunday combined
