Volleyball Upsets Number One High Point For Second Time This Season

Rock Hill SC – It was a thrilling senior night inside the Winthrop Coliseum for Winthrop volleyball. The Eagles closed out their regular season with a three-set sweep over top ranked High Point University (25-8, 25-20, 25-21). The four seniors that were honored prior to the game all had standout performances. Phoebe Wu had her fifth consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, she also had three aces and one solo block. Lou Rosario had 11 kills, 10 digs, and five service aces. Carlie Skelton finished with 13 digs and Hannah Spevak had key digs in the second and third sets.

How It Happened
The first set began with a five-point run by the Eagles with Rosario serving two of her five aces right out of the gate. In a full team effort, the Eagles cruised to a first set victory by an astonishing 25-8 win, at one point leading 19-3. Makayla Doyle put the cherry on top when she hammered a ball to the floor for set point.
The second set saw closer margins, but the Eagles were on top until High Point tied the set at 20-20. From there, the Eagles rattled off five straight points for the second set victory. Doyle had two kills in the last five points and Rosario had another ace. Following a tremendous defensive effort by Hannah Lackey, a kill from Rosario handed the Eagles a 2-0 match lead.

The Eagles again jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead, but the Panthers did not up easily. They tied the set 6-6 and the two teams continued to exchange points but he Eagles managed to maintain their lead until the Panthers pulled ahead,12-11. This would be the first and last time the Panthers would lead but they once again tied the frame at 20-20. Phoebe Wu went out with a bang in her last match at the Coliseum, scoring four of the Eagles' last five points. With a stuff block, a kill, and then back to back aces Wu closed out the set and completed the upset.
