SERIES/OVC HISTORY
  • This is the first meeting between Winthrop and SIUE
  • Winthrop is 5-6 all-time against current members of the Ohio Valley Conference
  • The Eagles have lost four of the last five meetings with OVC opponents
  • The only road win against an OVC opponent came Dec. 21, 2002 at Eastern Kentucky (84-73)
 
THE GAME
  • After both teams dropped their season openers, one team is guaranteed to walk away with their first win of the season
  • It is the second straight road game for the Eagles as they look to avoid a third straight loss on the road dating back to last year
  • SIUE has dropped four straight games at home after falling to Pacific this past Tuesday
 
WINTHROP       
  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his seventh season with the Eagles (121-72)
  • Eagles look to avoid an 0-2 start for the second straight season
  • The Eagles last trip to the state of Illinois resulted in an 84-80 overtime win over Illinois
  • Eagles scored 79 points in their opener behind 43 percent shooting, but were just 5-for-24 behind the arc (shot 57 percent inside the arc)
  • Outrebounded Vanderbilt 41-35 and had more points in the paint (42-40)
  • Nych Smith opened the season with a 21-point performance (career-high) and also pulled down a career-high five rebounds
  • Looking for a sixth straight season with 19 or more wins (averaged 21.4 wins over last five seasons)
 
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS EDWARDSVILLE
  • The Cougars are coached by Jon Harris in his fourth season (21-68 record)
  • Lost season opener at home to Pacific despite forcing 21 turnovers and knocking down eight triples
  • David McFarland led the team in scoring with 17 points while Daniel Kinchen added 13 points off the bench
  • In the first game the Cougars shot 39 percent from the floor, 26 percent from three and 50 percent at the foul line
 
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • Bjorn Broman now has 161 career threes and is now all alone at 10th all-time in program history
  • Broman is just outside the Top 10 all-time in career three-point field goal percentage at .363 (LaShawn Coulter is 10th at .373)

Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season.
