MADISON, WI – Seven Eagles scored Thursday night but the Winthrop women's basketball team fell 76-41 to the Wisconsin Badgers in the season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wisconsin (1-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter but the Eagles were able to battle the Badgers to a close opening 10 minutes.  Winthrop trailed 17-9 after the first quarter.  The Wisconsin lead hovered near double digits through the first five minutes of the second half before the Badgers were able to open up a 35-15 lead at the break.

Winthrop (0-1) played a strong third quarter, putting up 14 points but Wisconsin was able to increase its lead to 54-29 going into the final stanza.  The Badgers put up another 22 points in the final 10 minutes en route to the 76-41 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Jah'che Whitfield led the Eagles with eight points in her collegiate debut while Maleeah Langstaff added seven points with Kem Nwabudu, Sydney Buckley and Angela Coello Perez each scored ix points.

Winthrop shot 23 percent from the field while the Badgers connected on 42 percent of its shot attempts.  The Eagles hit two of their 13 attempts from three-point range and were outrebounded 71-30.

The Eagles will continue with a tough start to the season as Winthrop heads to Athens, GA Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Georgia Bulldogs.
