ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop men's basketball will travel to Lexington, KY for an afternoon contest on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against #10/2 Kentucky as part of the Ohio Valley Hardwood Showcase.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This will be the 3rd meeting all-time as the Eagles have dropped each of the first two meetings at Rupp Arena
  • The first meeting came on Nov. 21, 2003 as the Eagles fell 65-44 to the 9th-ranked Wildcats
  • The second meeting was Dec. 22, 2010 as Winthrop fell to 13th-ranked Kentucky 89-52
  • Winthrop has dropped six straight contests against SEC opponents
 
THE GAME
  • Winthrop is looking to bounce back after a 76-74 home loss to ETSU while Kentucky is looking for a 4th straight win after defeating VMI 92-82 on Sunday
  • Kentucky is averaging 85.8 ppg while allowing 79.3 ppg and Winthrop is averaging 95.2 ppg while allowing 87.2 ppg
  • The Wildcats are averaging just 4.8 three-point baskets per game but have more than doubled their opponents at the free throw line in makes and attempts (100-for-130 / 46-for-64)
  • Winthrop is hitting 10.3 three-points per game at 38 percent and is 72-for-95 at the foul line (76 percent)
  • This is the first game against a nationally-ranked opponent for Winthrop since Dec. 6, 2014 when the Eagles fell 82-62 at #21 Maryland

  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his seventh season with the Eagles (123-73)
  • Coming off a two-point loss to ETSU in which it led by seven with 3:41 to play
  • Coming into the game the Eagles were 42-4 since the start of 2016-17 when leading a game with five minutes to play
  • Nych Smith scored a career-high 26 points in the loss to ETSU as he leads the team with 19.3 ppg
  • Adam Pickett, who was in foul trouble versus ETSU and finished with four points in 16 minutes, is second in scoring at 14.8 ppg and shooting 62 percent from the floor
  • Josh Ferguson and Micheal Anumba are also in double-figures at 13.5 ppg and 10.3 ppg respectively
  • Winthrop currently leads the Big South in scoring (95.2 ppg), field goal percentage (.515), defensive rebounds (33.0) and its 10.3 three-pointers per game rank 4th in the league
 
KENTUCKY
  • Led by 10th-year head coach John Calipari, who has a career record of 723-205 and 278-65 at Kentucky
  • The Wildcats have won three straight since falling to Duke in the season opener
  • The 13-man roster is made up of 10 underclassmen as graduate senior Reid Travis, sophomore P.J. Washington and freshman Keldon Johnson highlight the roster being named to the preseason Citizen Naismith Trophy watch list
  • Reid leads the team in scoring as he paces three Wildcat players in double-figures at 15.3 ppg while Johnson is averaging 14.8 ppg and Washington is scoring 13.8 per game
  • Holding nearly a +20 advantage on the boards (+19.8) with 16.5 offensive boards per game
 
CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
  • Bjorn Broman now has 169 career threes and is all alone in 8th all-time in program history
  • Broman is just outside the Top 10 all-time in career three-point field goal percentage at .366 (LaShawn Coulter is 10th at .373)
