Eagles Host Newberry For Homecoming Saturday Looking For Second Straight Victory

ROCK HILL, SC – Coming off its first victory of the season, the Winthrop women's basketball team will host the Newberry Wolves Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. for Homecoming.

WINTHROP AT A GLANCE
Wednesday's victory over North Carolina Central was Winthrop's first non-conference victory over a Division I opponent since 2015.  The Eagles had three players finish in double-figure scoring, led by Jah'Che Whitfield with 15 points.  Kem Nwabudu and Anika Riley scored 14 and 10 points respectively and each tied for the team lead with five rebounds.

Winthrop had its best shooting night of the season, connecting on 45 percent of its three-point attempts.  NC Central barely edged out Winthrop on rebounds 38-37.

SCOUTING NEWBERRY
Newberry, who will play Saturday's contest as an exhibition, come to the Winthrop Coliseum with a perfect 3-0 record with victories over Erskine, North Greenville and Emmanuel.  The Wolves boast a very experienced roster with seven upperclassmen. 

Newberry has three players averaging more than 16 points per game through three contests.  Senior Meg Essex is averaging 17.3 points per game and is tied for the team lead in rebounding, pulling down 9.7 boards per game.  Regan McCarty is also averaging 9.7 rebounds per game and 16.7 points per game.  Shelby Britten has averaged 16 points per game this season.

ALL-TIME AGAINST NEWBERRY
The Eagles are 11-1 all-time against Newberry.  The two teams last played November 22, 2008 in Rock Hill with the Eagles coming away with a 67-55 victory.  The lone victory for the Wolves came February 25, 1982 in a 64-63 decision.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Following Saturday's home contest, the Eagles hit the road for its next four matchups.  Winthrop matches up with in-state opponent Wofford on November 20.

Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season.
