Buies Creek, NC – The Eagles earned a quick 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18) road sweep over Campbell University behind the solid performances by middle blockers,
Lily Leistiko and
Makayla Doyle. This is the fourth consecutive win for the Eagles and they are now 6-2 in conference and 10-10 overall. The loss moves the Camels to 3-4 and 5-12.
How It Happened
The first set was tied at 3-3 until a 6-0 run by the Eagles pushed the score to 9-3, forcing Campbell to call a timeout. After committing a few errors and allowing Campbell a couple kills the lead was cut to two at 11-9. A hitting error by Campbell and a kill from
Phoebe Wu sparked another 6-0 run to push their lead, 19-10. The Eagles would breeze through to finish the set; Leistiko had five kills (.833), and
Siani Yamaguchi had 3 kills (.750) and 13 assists.
The Eagles led the second set from the start, only allowing the Camels to get as close at three points, 21-18. Doyle pounded a kill to the floor and
Carlie Skelton followed with a service ace at 23-18. The Camels only scored once more in the set and a block from Leistiko sealed the Winthrop second set victory, 25-19. Doyle managed 6 kills in the set with a hitting percentage of .667.
The Camels scored the first point of the third set but that would be their only set lead. Wu started the third set with a kill and then followed that by back to back aces to jump to a quick 3-1 lead. The Camels tied the set at 13 all but a 4-0 run by the Eagles moved the score to 17-13. Key kills by Gunter and Leistiko would pave the way to the set and match victory, 25-18. Yamaguchi, Big South Player of the Week, continued her dominance with 40 assists, 13.3 per set, two blocks, and one ace while setting her team to a .319 hitting efficiency. Defender of the Week.
Carlie Skelton, continues to run the back row; she dug 18 balls for 6 digs per set and added in two service aces. Leistiko finished with a match high 11 kills, .455 efficiency, and three blocks. Doyle added 10 kills, .556 efficiency, and one block.

The Eagles are back at home this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to take on Hampton University. Winthrop has only played Hampton three times in their history, winning all three matches. Â
