ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped its first home conference game of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 72-48 to the Campbell Camels.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Campbell (8-5, 1-1) raced out to an 11-2 lead in the opening quarter but the Eagles battled back and were able to cut the deficit down to only two at the end of the first quarter, 17-15.
Winthrop (1-12, 0-2) grabbed the first two points of the second quarter to tie the contest 17-17. The Camels went back up by four at 25-21 but another quick run by the Eagles evened the score at 25-25 with just over three minutes remaining. Campbell closed the half on a 4-0 run and took a 29-25 lead into the break.
Campbell came out in the second half and scored the first 12 points of the third period, pushing its lead to 41-25 with 7:04 remaining. The two sides then started to trade buckets and the Camels led 51-36 after the third quarter.
The Eagles struggled to keep Campbell off of the three-point line in the final quarter as the Camels knocked down four triples en route to the 72-48 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Courtney Hagaman led the Eagles in scoring, finishing with 15 points which included three three-pointers. Anika Riley added 10 points and pulled down six boards. Ronata Rogers led the Eagles with eight rebounds on the afternoon.
Winthrop finished the contest shooting 32.8 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc. The Eagles pulled down 31 rebounds to Campbell's 42. The Camels shot 45 percent from the field and connected on 11-of-30 three-point attempts.

Winthrop will continue conference play on the road Tuesday as the Eagles head to Lynchburg, VA to take on the Liberty Flames for a 7 p.m. contest.
