SIX STRAIGHT: Late Defensive Effort Lifts Eagles To 75-64 Win Over Campbell Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop finished the game on a 9-0 run to capture a sixth straight win with a 75-64 victory over Campbell, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

FIRST HALF
  • Anders Broman opened up the scoring with a corner three and was fouled in the act as he completed the four-point play and Xavier Cooks followed with a bucket inside for a quick 6-0 lead
  • Campbell answered with a 7-0 run as four different players scored
  • Leading 10-9 with 14:05 to play in the half, Winthrop went on a 10-2 run for a 20-11 lead
  • Adam Pickett scored off a drive to start the run as Anders Broman followed with a three
  • After Chris Clemons scored inside, Anders Broman hit another triple followed by a Josh Ferguson puttback after his own miss
  • The Eagles led by 11 on a couple of occasions during the half and held a 39-30 lead at the break
  • Winthrop shot 57 percent in the half (4-for-10 from three) while Campbell was held to 39 percent shooting (1-for-8 behind the arc)
  • The first 11-point led came with 4:09 left after dunk by Josh Ferguson and after the Camels scored to cut it back to nine points, Xavier Cooks scored for the 11-point advantage with 2:55 left in the half
  • Winthrop had nine turnovers in the first half while Campbell had five but the Eagles had a 10-6 edge in points off turnovers
  • Cooks and Anders Broman combined for 25 points in the first half 
 
SECOND HALF
  • Campbell scored a quick four points to start the second half but the Eagles pushed the lead back to nine points at 45-36 following a Bjorn Broman corner three with 16:42 to play
  • Campbell then reeled off six straight to make it a one possession game but a runner on the baseline by Cooks ended the spurt
  • The Camels pulled within two points at 52-50 after a dunk from Clemons
  • The Eagles then pushed the lead back to six points with 9:34 left before back-to-back threes from the Camels tied the game at 56-56 with 8:34 remaining
  • After Bjorn Broman made 1-of-2 free throws, Shane Whitfield hit a tough jumper off glass to give Campbell its first lead of the second half at 58-57
  • Winthrop took a 63-62 lead with 6:07 left when Bjorn Broman drove and scored with the left hand
  • That was followed by a Ferguson three-point play to lead by four with just over five and a half to play
  • It was a two-point game with 5:19 left, but the Eagles were the only team to score over the next four minutes
  • Cooks drove the lane as the shot clock was winding down and scored off glass on the drive for a 70-64 lead with 1:47 to play
  • After Clemons missed off glass on a drive, Ferguson rebounded the ball and was fouled as he went to the other end and hit both free throws
  • After the second free throw Bjorn Broman stole the inbounds pass, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 as the Eagles still led by eight points (72-64) with 37 seconds left
  • Defense played a big role down the stretch as the Eagles held Campbell scoreless over the final 5:19 after Andrew Eudy scored to make it a two-point game
  • Campbell shot 47 percent for the half, but missed its final seven shots 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 52 percent for the game despite hitting just two their final seven shots
  • Campbell finished the game at 43 percent, but was just 3-for-19 behind the arc
  • Winthrop finished with four players in double-figures (Cooks 21, B. Broman 18, A. Broman 12, and Ferguson 11)
  • Both teams combined for just 10 bench points (WU 4, CU 6)
  • Winthrop had nine first half turnovers, but just three in the second half for a total of 12 while Campbell turned the ball over eight times in the second half (13 for the game)
  • Winthrop's top two scorers Xavier Cooks and Anders Broman were 9-for-15 for 15 points in the first half while Campbell's top two scorers with 3-for-12 for 11 points
  • Clemons finished the game 0-for-7 from three and 5-of-19 in the game, which was the first game this year he was held without a made three
  • Eagles held Clemons to a season-low 11 points 
 
NOTABLES
  • Eagles have now won five of the last six meetings with Campbell
  • Winthrop's six-game winning streak is the longest against Big South opponents in the regular season since 2016-17 when the team won seven straight
  • It's the longest win streak since the 2016-17 team won eight straight before falling in the NCAA Tournament to Butler
  • Winthrop has now held five of its last six opponents under 70 points
  • Cooks scored 21 points to give him 1,600 for his career, becoming just the 4th Eagle in program history to reach that mark (35th player in league history)
  • He also became just the second Eagle to ever pull down 900 rebounds (7th player in league history) as he now trails Charles Brunson by 13 boards to become the program's all-time leader
  • Eagles had a 33-30 advantage on the boards and are now 13-0 on the year when winning that battle
  • The Eagles bench scored just four points as it was the first time the Eagles won this season when the bench contributed fewer than 10 points
  • The victory was the 115th of Pat Kelsey's career and the 73rd win by double-figures
  • During the win streak the Eagles have defeated every team by 11 or more points

It's back to the road for the Eagles as they head to Lynchburg, VA on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. to take on Liberty.
