GREENVILLE, NC – The Winthrop volleyball team takes the first match against The Citadel 3-1 before falling to Hampton 3-2 on Friday at The East Carolina Classic.

EAGLES HIGHLIGHTS (AGAINST THE CITADEL)

• Senior Keaupono Fey led the Eagles with 14 kills and only one error while hitting a .464 percent
• Sophomore Siani Yamaguchi led the Eagles with five kills on seven attacks while having 36 assists

EAGLES HIGHLIGHTS (AGAINST HAMPTON)

• Sophomore Jace Kleffner led the Eagles with 17 kills with a .265 hitting percentage
• Sophomore Sydney Gunter helped the Eagles on the offensive side also with 13 kills

HOW IT HAPPENED (AGAINST THE CITADEL)
Set 1

• Winthrop started the set on a 4-1 run but the Citadel fought back and eventually tied it 14-14
• The Citadel took a little lead but both teams kept it tied at 20-20
• The Bulldogs finished the set on a 5-2 run to take the first one 25-22

Set 2

• The Bulldogs took the early lead 12-8 but the Eagles came back to tied it 12-12
• The Eagles fought the whole set but did not take their first lead until they went up 20-19
• Winthrop finished on a 5-1 run to win 25-20

Set 3

• The Eagles started the set on fire going up 11-3
• The Citadel tried to come back but were unable to take the lead at all during this set as the Eagles win 25-23

Set 4

• Winthrop were still feeling it to start the set on a 10-3 run
• The Bulldogs came back to tie it 10-10
• The Eagles and the Bulldogs fought back and forth but Winthrop had a late run to win 25-23

HOW IT HAPPENED (AGAINST HAMPTON)
Set 1

• The Eagles and Pirates fought back and forth the entire set
• The Pirates never gave up and let the Eagles take back the lead but the Pirates took the first set 25-23

Set 2

• Hampton only lead in the second set was when it started the set off 2-0
• The Eagles took the second set easily and finished the set on a 8-4 run

Set 3

• Winthrop and Hampton went back and forth in the beginning of the set until Winthrop pulled away to go up 20-16
• Hampton finished the set on a 9-3 run to win the third set 25-23

Set 4

• Winthrop had no problem taking this set. Started the set off on a 13-6 run
• The Eagles kept adding points to go on and win the fourth set 25-17

Set 5

• Winthrop and Hampton fought back and forth and nobody took a big lead
• Hampton goes on a 3-0 run at the end to win the set 15-12
