ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team heads to High Point on Friday to battle the Campbell Camels at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament.
The Eagles are riding a six-game winning streak and are coming off a 20-10 victory over Radford last Sunday in the tournament quarterfinals. Campbell, the number two seed in the tournament, received a bye to the semifinals and last played on April 22 in an 11-9 victory over Radford.
Winthrop and Campbell met a little over a month ago in the squads' first conference game of the season in Buies Creek. The Eagles felt he Camels 17-16. Campbell jumped out to a big lead, going up 7-0 halfway through the first half. Winthrop battled back, going on a 12-2 run to take a 12-9 lead. The teams went back and forth and Campbell took a 17-14 lead with just under six minutes remaining. Winthrop made a late charge, scoring two goals to get within one but couldn't complete the comeback.
Nicole Beatson leads the Eagles on offense this year with 56 goals and 32 assists. Beatson broke the Winthrop single-season points record against Radford on Sunday. The old record of 85 points was set last year by Shannon Gallagher.
The Camels have been led by Melissa Placek with 42 goals and 11 assists. Kayla Reilly leads the team with 64 points on 26 goals and 38 assists. Merredith Bechler has played the majority of minutes in goal and has allowed an average of 12 goals per game while making 39 percent of her saves.
Friday's semifinal winner will advance to the conference championship on Sunday at noon. The winner will meet either High Point of Liberty who battle in the first semifinal Friday at 4 p.m.
