ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team fell 7-4 to North Carolina A&T, Wednesday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 23-18 on the season and will be back in action this weekend as they host Gardner-Webb for a three-game series. The first game of the series will be Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN3. With the win, the Aggies improved to 22-21.
Sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb led the Eagles at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior
Babe Thomas went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI while senior
Anthony Paulsen went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Winthrop got the board in the bottom of the first as it started off the game with three consecutive singles by sophomore
Matthew Mulkey, sophomore
Grant English, and Paulsen. Mulkey scored from a sacrifice fly by junior
Mitch Spires.
The Aggies added four runs in the third inning when Kyle Clary doubled with one out, scored on a single by Brandon Melendez. Milton Rivera singled to right that scored Timothy Ravare from second who walked earlier that inning. Adan Ordonez singled to center that scored Melendez and Rivera.
The Eagles inched their way closer when they added two runs in the bottom of the third when Lipscomb doubled to right that scored Paulsen from first. Lipscomb then scored from second on a single by Thomas.
Winthrop tied it in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore
Brandon Fite singled, advanced to second on a single by sophomore
Jake Sullivan, and scored off of an error by the shortstop.
North Carolina A&T scored the go-ahead run in the fifth when Melendez scored off of a single by Jarrett Norman. The Aggies added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Winthrop freshman
Zach Peek suffered the loss as he pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run (none earned) on two hits and falls to 2-1 on the season. The Aggies Hunter Leon earned the win as he threw two innings, allowing one run on two hits and improved to 1-1 on the season. Noah Dyals earned his sixth save on the season.
