Winthrop Falls To Charlotte 11-9 On Tuesday

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop baseball fell 11-9 to Charlotte in a non-conference midweek contest, Tuesday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.

It was the final home game of the season for the Eagles, who drop their third straight non-conference contest and are now 29-21 on the year while Charlotte improves to 29-22. The

Eagles will wrap-up the regular season in a three-game series at Radford starting Thursday, May 18 with game one set to start at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles, who have won seven of their last eight league games, will have an opportunity to claim the Big South regular season title.

Charlotte scored three runs in the top of the eighth to grab the lead for good as it tied the game on an RBI double to left center by Jackson Mims and took the lead on an RBI single by Nick Daddio. Harris Yett drove in the third run of the inning on a fielder's choice for a two-run lead.

Winthrop built a 5-0 lead after four innings as it jumped on the 49ers in the bottom of the first. Mitch Spires plated the first run on a fielder's choice with runners at the corners and then Babe Thomas stepped in and hit his 8th home run of the season with a two-run shot to right.

The Eagles added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Thomas and then another sac fly in the fourth by Grant English put the Eagles ahead 5-0. Charlotte got two back in the fifth and the Eagles responded by getting one back in the bottom of the inning on a Hunter Lipscomb RBI singled, scoring Spires for a 6-2 lead.

Charlotte's offense continued to heat up as it posted two more runs in the sixth and then four more in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead. The four-run inning was in part to a couple of fielding errors by the Eagles that allowed two runs to score.

The lead for the 49ers was short lived as the Eagles posted three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-8 lead. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out and after a pitching change by the 49ers, C.J. Hicks came through with a two-run single up the middle. Jake Sullivan then reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed a run to score and the Eagles were back on top.

Carson Gregory (0-1) took the loss in relief after allowing three runs on one hit with a walk. Charlotte's Colby Bruce only tossed 0.2 innings in relief but earned the win and improved to 3-0.

Anthony Paulsen was 1-for-4 in the game as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games and has now reached base in 31 straight. Spires, Lipscomb and Sullivan all finished with two hits.
