Eagles Fall To Campbell In Series Opener Friday Night

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop allowed seven runs over the final three innings as it fell 7-1 to Campbell in the opening game of a three-game series, Friday evening at Terry Field.

The loss snaps the Winthrop winning streak at four games as it is now 20-18 overall and 6-3 in the Big South. Campbell improves to 21-20 overall and 6-4 in the league. The two teams will be back in action on Saturday to complete the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

"I felt the real difference in the game was the two-run home run and the grand slam," said Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke. "They put a lot of hits on the board on us. They made good adjustments and we didn't. After the fourth inning they made the adjustments and hit the ball hard on us. Our defense wasn't as solid as it has been and our offense wasn't there at all tonight. We'll have to recover tonight and make adjustments for tomorrow. That's a good hitting team."

Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Brooke Ellison came through with two outs with a double to right center. Madison Templeton, who was on first, came all the way around to score for the lead.

Katie Baker gave Campbell a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning as she took the first pitch over the fence in left with a runner at first for a two-run shot. Bailey Bjorson opened the game up in the sixth inning when she hit a line drive over the fence in center for a grand slam.

Baker also turned in a complete game in the circle allowing the Eagles just one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 10-7 on the year. Kiley Majette took the loss for the Eagles as she allowed six runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts and is now 11-10 on the year.
