Lacrosse Falls 20-10 On the Road to High Point Wednesday

HIGH POINT, NCAllie Yeager scored a season-high five goals Wednesday afternoon, but the Winthrop lacrosse team fell in conference play 20-10 on the road to High Point.

Winthrop falls to 0-2 in the conference and 3-9 overall with the loss while High Point improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big South.

The Panthers started strong, scoring three goals in the first four minutes.  Winthrop was able to battle back to get within one at 4-3 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the half. 

The Eagles continued to trail by one at 6-5 with 11:02 on the clock before High Point scored three goals in 55 seconds to take a 9-5 edge.  Just over a minute later, the game was halted for 45 minutes due to lightning in the area.  After the delay, Winthrop pulled one goal back with less than four minutes left.  High Point finished off the half by increasing its lead back to four with 41 seconds on the clock.

High Point extended its lead to eight, scoring four goals in the first eight minutes of the second half.  Twice Winthrop tried to make a run, scoring two straight goals, but each time High Point was able to squash the Eagle run as the Panthers went on for the 20-10 victory.

Yeager tallied her team-high five goals on only five shots.  Katherine Judge added two goals and led the team with nine draw control and four ground balls. 

The Eagles will now return home for the first time in three weeks when they host Radford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
