Nine Eagles Score As Lacrosse Cruises Past Gardner-Webb 23-2 Wednesday

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team got multi-goal games from nine different players Wednesday evening as the Eagles downed the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 23-2.

Winthrop improves to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the victory while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-16 overall and 0-6 in the Big South.  The win also marked the 100th career victory for Winthrop head coach Julika Blankenship.

The Eagles will close out the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home contest against the Liberty Flames.  Winthrop is currently assured of hosting a quarterfinal tournament game but with a win Saturday, the Eagles will secure third place in the conference.

Ellie Marindin continued her hot streak offensively scoring four goals and assisting on four others.  Katie Clark and Katherine Judge each tallied three goals while Clark also tallied three assists.  Caroline Boudreau, Kristen Shriver, Lexie Walton, Bianca Tedesco, Ann Marie Langrehr and Sydney Cope each also scored two goals. 

Judge led the Eagles with five draw controls while Shriver and Laura Trilling tied for the team lead with three ground balls.  Trilling also led the team with three caused turnovers.  Chloe Wormsley finished with four saves in the victory.

Winthrop came out strong offensively, scoring five times in the opening four minutes.  Gardner-Webb netted its lone goal of the first half with 23:28 on the clock.  The Eagles tallied 11 more goals over the final 22 minutes of the first half, taking a 16-1 lead into the break.

The Eagles offensive attack slowed in the early going of the second half as Winthrop scored five goals over the opening 15 minutes, taking a 21-1 lead  The Bulldogs netted their second-half goal with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest.  Winthrop scored twice more of the final five minutes to reach the final score.
