Women's Golf Finishes 5th in Big South Championship; Sets New 18 Hole Record in Final Round

Chelsea Dantonio Sets Winthrop Scoring Low for Big South Tournament

NINETY SIX, SC---The Winthrop women's golf team set a new school record for the lowest 18-hole score while finishing fifth in the 2017 Big South Conference Championship that was completed Wednesday afternoon at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.

The Eagles fired a team score of 1-over par 289 in the final round of the 54-hole event over the Par 72, 6.045-yard course and finished with a tournament total of 894 (302-303-289).  Winthrop was led by sophomore Chelsea Dantonio (Lancaster, NY) who tied for seventh in medal play with a 1-over par 217 (74-72-71).  That score was the lowest ever by a Winthrop player in a Big South Championship.  All-Big South selection Ashley Sloup (Southport, NC) tied for 18th after finishing with a 224 (76-75-73).

Sophomore Julie Reinertsen (Oslo, Norway) was one shot back and tied for 20th at 225 (76-77-72).  Junior Louise Jeppesen (Helsingborg, Sweden) shot 228 (79-79-73) and tied for 25th place.  Rounding out the Winthrop performances was Chandler Case who finished 41st at 247 (80-85-82).

Campbell successfully defended its Big South Championship and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament by shooting 849 (289-280-280) to win the tournament by 25 shots over second place Gardner-Webb (874).  High Point was third (883), followed closely by Presbyterian College (885).  Winthrop finished four shots ahead of sixth place  Charleston Southern (898).  UNC Asheville placed seventh (926), followed by Longwood in eighth (937) and Radford, ninth (939)

Celia Mansour from Presbyterian College captured the medalist award by finishing at 9-under par 207 (71-66-70)--two shots better than Campbell's Nadine White.
